Who's going to be the first to use this in a build?
« on: January 08, 2013, 12:47:28 am »
According to AP, Lenovo is releasing a 27" 'coffee table PC'.

Quote
It's big enough to fit four people around it, and the screen can respond to ten fingers touching it at the same time.
. . .
The Table PC will include plastic "strikers" for "Air Hockey," and joysticks that attach to the screen with suction cups for other games, including multiplayer shooter "Raiding Company."

That is crazy, I put together a part list to make a virtual 42" air hockey table running on android. Got the idea after playing a sick air hockey game on jah smart phone.

I think I read they also had a 36 inch version.   In fact I think that is what they demo'd at CES.

Very cool!  was looking at these for possible application at work too.

touch based interfaces will never be as good as a traditional mechanical solution.

I really can't stand touch interfaces, and don't see the point at all for gaming: the screen is constantly being obscured by your hand/fingers, there no tactile feedback, its not accurate, etc. But apparently the masses love their touchscreens, even for gaming (looking at angry birds sales).

These screens are great for things like composing music, or arty things where precision isn't necessary and a mouse gets real tiring. I saw a video of a guy setting up some music sequencing on a touch screen, and while he was obviously practiced, it seemed very easy and cool. For anything retro, nothing comes to mind.

For arty things, I would think a pen/graphic tablet would work much more natural.

I figured that other than a few air-hockey type games someone could maybe . . . I dunno . . . come up with a way to connect some kind of controller through a USB port or something crazy like that.

Anyone know where to go to find information on how to do that?  Bonus points for a site that shows how to do arcade-type controls?   >:D   :laugh2:

A cool use for this thing would be to make a new version of the boardgame.

It would be perfect for players of the Pen & Paper RPGs.  An easy to use battle map with dynamic loading of scenery based on where the battle is being fought.

In the family room, I can see this being good for things like home automation control, tv interaction / guide, family calendar,  etc

If nothing else, it'll have the accolade of being the most often cleaned piece of furniture ever created.

Don't ask how I know, but people don't clean their dirty mags, I doubt they'll clean that.

Maybe for something like this:

A lot of people don't clean their stuff. I (wash my hands and) clean my phone every time I come in the house. But humans are robust creatures. I just prefer not to bump uglies with their germs.

I plan to have a 32" TV in my coffeetable. One thing is that we play a lot of boardgames, so I'm experimenting with an autogenerated random Catan island. No more accidently moved tiles when placing pawns etc.
