ipac2 - USB connected computer wont POST
« on: November 26, 2012, 08:35:41 pm »
Anyone had this problem before?

If I have the iPac2 connected when I cold boot the computer it won't even make it to the motherboard logo screen. It just stays on a black screen indefinitely.

If I connect the ipac2 after the computer has booted everything functions correctly with no problems whatsoever.

I'm no engineer but I'm fairly well versed and have never had a USB device cause a problem like this. I would appreciate any help.

Thanks!

Also I have tried each USB port and other USB devices. The problem happens regardless of which USB port it is plugged into and no other devices cause problems.

I know zilch about the ipac2 so Im not much help, but could it be that the 5 vdc is on the usb port all the time (even when PC is shutdown)? Maybe the ipac2 or the computer dont like having the power on before the usb or ipac drivers load?

I've seen this before.  I can't remember what it was,  I'll think on it awhile and get back to you.  In the meantime,  and it sounds strange,  disable the power management feature in Bios.  That's sticking out in my mind for some odd reason.

The other possibility that comes to mind is that the Bios might be seeing it as a keyboard,  and getting freaked out when it doesn't respond as it expected.  It would be normal for the computer to try to query keyboards at startup,  and depending on the response generate a "Keyboard failure" message.  It may be expecting some specific response or no response,  and the IPAC might be returning some other value that's causing the Bios to hang due to a bug with handling an unexpected response.  A Bios update could fix that.

But some odd reason,  the power management is still sticking out in my mind as a cause for this.  I swear someone had this problem a couple of years back and he and I tracked it back to that.

I have seen this alot mainly on Intel motherboards. Disable USB boot in the BIOS and see if it works.
Ive seen systems that will hang at a black screen ans some will have a black screen with a flashing cursor.
