What's yer favorite trackball game?
« on: November 09, 2012, 12:18:00 pm »
For months and months, I've been addicted to 4-way games...mostly things like vs. Exitebike, Galaga, etc.  But, more recently, I've been really liking World Class Bowling.  Of course, I've always loved Golden Tee '97 (the only GT on my box).

So, what are *YOUR* favorite trackball games?  I'm looking for some new stuff to play.

Quantum, Marble Madness, Shuuz, along with more accurate centipede and missile command are the primary drivers for me adding a track ball outside of golden tee which you've already mentioned.

Favorites for me:

Marble Madness
Centipede
Kick
Crystal Castles
Shuffle Shot

Give Kick a try, it's probably the least known on my list. Very fun and addictive. It's a 2 way trackball game, left/right. It's also a vertical game. Your a unicyclist catching falling balloons on his head. When it speeds up, your hand and trackball will get a good workout.

P.S. Pac-Man has a cameo in the game.

Is there a secret to getting Marble Madness to load/run?  I've downloaded multiple ROM sets and haven't yet been able to get the game to function.

Yeah.  I have a single trackball.  I remember Kick, though!  What a fun game!  Looking at it over a KLOV and it's fun just to look at.

Star Wars and Crossbow aren't actually trackball games but they still make pretty good trackball games. In fact both translate so well to the trackball controls that I was able to rock my skills on dedicated machines with the correct controls once I FINALLY got to play on some.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

If I could build any track ball game at this moment, it would be Rampart.

(Guess I could add a trackball to my Ultracade, but I want to play it in multiplayer)

Funny enough, his final post was about his most hated game:

Yup, Centipede is terribly overrated, once the appeal of rolling around a trackball goes away.

I second that. Great game

I'd say my favorite trackball game is Missile Command but its never as fun to play with my 2.5" trackball as it is with the original 4.5" trackball

Don't laugh but I figured out how to play 720 and arkanoid pretty well with a trackball.

My favorite standard trackball game is Marble Madness.  Crystal Castle, Centipede, and kick are fun too.

The trackball is such an awesome controller—I wish there were more games made for it.

Some great mentions so far.

Wacko is pretty cool—it has Robotron-esque controls and gameplay, but the “move around” joystick is replaced with a trackball.  The firing is with a joystick, but it’s only 4 directions as opposed to 8 like in Robotron.  Tough game to learn, but great fun if you stick with it long enough to get the hang of it.

Shoot the Bull is a decent take on darts.

Simpsons Bowling is pretty fun, totally different take on using a trackball for bowling.

As has already been mentioned, there are several games that aren’t trackball games in their original cabinets, but are very playable and fun with a trackball:

Monte Carlo – old school overhead racer from Atari, surprisingly fun.

Championship Sprint

Pole Position

Hang On

Major Havoc – this one had a single-axis horizontal “roller”, so a trackball is a totally reasonable substitute.

Tac Scan – cool vector shooter that used a spinner originally

Mad Planets – controls similar to Wacko, but originally used a spinner.  Freakin’ awesome game.

I haven't tried many trackball games in mame
do to my frustration with getting them configured
properly, so I've been collecting trackball jamma boards.

Capcom/Coors Light Bowling: It's ok considering how
basic it is compared to newer bowling games in terms
of graphics and physics. Still fun and challenging though.

Krazy Bowl: More advanced graphics and more realistic
physics than capcom bowling. A bit more challenging
as well.

American Horseshoes: Pretty fun.
Features George H.W. Bush as a referee. you can bounce
a horseshoe off his face if you so choose.

Millipede and marble madness are my favs but Star Wars/esb and operation wolf are surprisingly playable with a trackball too.
