3/4 size arcade cad plans?
« on: November 02, 2012, 12:28:35 pm »
Hello everyone, i feel a bit sheepish to be posting here, ive been a lurker for a long time and thought id first be posting with my own project, but alas i am still to convince my wife to let me have one.

I remember coming here years ago, Onds infamous thread still only being the first page the week i started reading here.

anyways ive managed to convince my wife to let me get an arcade cabinet for our daughter, and if it turns out alright i reckon ill be able to by the necessary tools to build my self one too. Ive decided to get my kids one cnc cut and routed as it will have no flaws and impress the missus (hopefully) but i cant seem to find any 3/4 size autocad plans, does any one know of any?

looking for a 3/4. 2 player cp layout.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Any particular reason you are scaling down your project? The usual reason seems to be to satisfy a wife. For some reason they always think that the TALLER games take up more room in their house. I finally got my wife to start looking at width as the real thing to look at, because it isn't like you can walk around on top of the machines.

The space and cost savings of a scaled down project are inconsequential. Maybe $5 worth of wood and 6" worth of space. To create what is essentially a crippled project.

Most arcade cabinets are already designed with the panels low enough for children to play on them. Scale the thing down and your kids will be too big to use the thing in a couple years, and it is very difficult to get a usable 2 player control panel in 18" of space.

Consider copying a cabaret design at full size instead. They still feature that "it isn't 6 feet tall so it fools my wife" design, with the added bonus that both adults and children can play on it. There is a guy on the klov.com forums who runs a CNC arcade cabinet production setup and he could make you a brand new cabaret cabinet (username dptwiz).

Just wanted to give warning before you dump a bunch of money into something that almost no one will end up being happy with in the long term.

Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

An 8 year old is already big enough to play on a standard cabinet. These things were made with children in mind. If you scale it down she will be too tall for it by the time she is 11.

Not trying to be a know it all. I have just been around the scene long enough and have done enough projects that I have personally made almost every mistake possible in the hobby and the few I didn't make I have seen fairly close hand.

I would suggest reading this thread on another forum, and picking out something you like. It will get you something around the same size as a 3/4 scale, but way more usable because the design isn't just standard cabinet x .75.

I made a small arcade machine. I just use a stool in front of it, and it's fun for the whole family.
