Where to buy a d-pad or tiny arcade joystick?
« on: September 27, 2012, 04:47:07 pm »
I've had little luck searching for a joystick or d-pad assembly. Preferably a d-pad. I have an idea in mind for a really rocking jukebox and am sourcing parts right now.

Hack an NES controller? Joystick wise... is this too big?

That's a little big but I could live with it!

If I could I'd rather purchase a d-pad assembly than hack a controller. Not that I have issues soldering, but inside this juke idea there is limited space.

Google "Apem joystick" and you'll find a few varities of the stick I posted in the previous post. Then there's really small stuff like what Bender used in his micro DK build: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,111395.0.html

Here are a few possibilities:

Thumbstick from arcadeshop.de

Grayhill battop from Allied Electronics.  Other suppliers like Mouser carry it too, IIRC.  This is what Bender used in his micro DK and Le Chuck is using in his micro Gauntlet.

Grayhill joystick from Allied

These Grayhill joysticks have a .850" square base.  Darasheet here.

BTW you don't need to solder on the Grayhill joystick pins. The joystick pins fit snugly into .100" header sockets like this or this.  The spacing is wrong to fit more than one pin to a connector, but 5 individual connections works great.  These box-style socket pins can be easily removed from the connector body.

CAUTION:  The joystick pins aren't quite long enough to work properly with the commonly used ramp-style KK100-type contacts like this.

That  thumbstick from arcadeshop seems pretty cool. its digital so hook up should be easy and it appears to have the easiest mounting of any of the others shown.
