Hi Everyone ---

I have a Mame machine that was built for me several years ago and the computer crashed and died so trying to build a new system.

It has a Happ 3" Trackball and Tornado spinner.   All the wiring is done so it was basically plug and play previously.

The old set up had the trackball connected to the PC (running XP) via a USB, Spinner via the PS/2 and Keyboard via the remaining PS/2 using the KE72 encoder.

The only way I can make the trackball work now (on the new system) is connect it to the PS/2 slot (will not work via the USB connection anymore).   The Spinner doesn't work at all.   Also, I noticed that when I plugged a mouse directly to a USB port on the computer it would light up and power but wouldn't work as well.

If I remove the PS/2 trackball connection and try to replug it back in after windows has launched that device fails to work.

I have tried rebooting the machine with spinner connected to the PS/2 from the get-go (and none of the trackball connections) but nothing happens.

Any help is appreciated.  Also happy to supply any other needed info.

When plugging in the device you will get a message in the bottom right (Near the clock), see if this is coming back with the following.

"There was an error installing the device"  and something about firmware.  I have seen this happen a lot at where I work and you have to pull the usb out, then plug in again and sometimes this takes about 10 attempts to get it working. It's a PITA.  We are running xp sp3 on the machines.

We have found if you boot to safe mode, uninstall all the USB devices and then uninstall the USB Hubs themselves that when it reboots and detects it can resolve the issue.

You need to check that you have the right chipset drivers etc installed as well as making sure you are on the latest version of bios release

It could also be a bad USB port on the new machine. You might try plugging a mouse or something into it just to make sure that other devices +are+ recognized in that port.

I am not receiving any hardware found messages when I plug remove and re-plug in the spinner or trackball to the USB port.

So I should proceed the the removing the USB devices suggestion?

Since the spinner is not responding and only has a PS/2 connection?  Any suggestions?

The USB port is fine since I can connect an external hard drive to it

THe PS/2 works since the trackball works on that port.  I just can't get the spinner to work on that port.

If you try the spinner on another machine does it work?

Yes.  Works on another machine.

Seems to be the hardware configuration on this machine.   How can I force the machine to recognize the spinner (via a PS/2) and the Trackaball (via the USB port).

Just a wild stab, but some machine bios's have a "legacy usb" setting.

You might check to see if yours has such a thing and experiment with the different settings.
