It would be nice to store all those cars and disc boxes. I just cleaned out all 240 Xbox 360 and PS3 games boxes and put the games into CD folders, which does save a bunch of room for more gear. Looking at that picture reminds me why we have hard drives in our hobby and not that cluttered mess.
IMO A hard drive full of files (or a folder full of discs) is not nearly as fun as a nice display of carts and packages. Yeah, clutter is a bit of a problem but I've seen large collections stored and displayed nicely. But I suppose it's the collector's priorities if they prefer simply having the game or if they want something they can display and look at when not playing it. I'm more of the latter.
I imagine you saved your cases if you ever want to trade/resell? Maybe I'm alone on this or maybe there are others that feel the same way, but I generally won't purchase a disc-based game that's not in its case. I make some exception depending on age (those old Sega CD/Sega Saturn/early Playstation tall jewel cases were notoriously fragile), rarity, or if they're purchased from a store with a return policy - but even then I'm not shelling out much more than bottom-dollar. In the back of my mind, I'm assuming they were stored improperly seeing as a case that's designed to be saved and utilized went missing.
Absolutely.
I don't sell my games, where my friends do after they complete them. I know that the game is worth more to me considering the cost of each game, the circumstances getting them, etc.
Unfortunately with each house move I need to prioritize my collection but I have games dating back from the early 80's but do not have the hardware to run it on. If you have the room and you don't ever move, it would be awesome to have such a collection. I don't sell my collections but part with them to my mates (who sell them later) thinking they are going to a good home.
Yet old collections on the hard drive does makes sense if you do not have reliable hardware to play the originals on. 360 and PS3 disc boxes are easily available, and when the time comes to have a display case, they can be replaced as I have all the inserts, but again it comes down to space which most of us are "allowed" to have.

Carts are harder and tend to be in boxes stored in the garage.
It is clutter (arrived at through years of mental conditioning) unless you are a bachelor and can get away with such behaviour
