Two new (to me) After Burners
« on: July 13, 2012, 12:32:16 am »
I picked up my second and third cabs today, so I guess this is how it starts.  I got two inop After Burner uprights for $40 off of Craigslist.  One is missing the plastic and CP, but the seller said he had them at a different location and that I could pick them up Saturday.  He did say that the other set of controls wasn't factory so we'll see what's up with that later.

I'm gonna try and see if I can get one working unit out of the two.  The one with the CP has some water damage and is missing artwork on one side while it's completely missing from the other.  The second cab is in better shape and has pretty decent artwork on both sides.

The insides of both are pretty dirty and the bottoms are littered with tokens.  One of them actually still had the manuals for both the game and coin mech inside.

The worse of the two looks like it may have spent some time underwater; there's some serious corrosion going on.

The second one is in much better condition internally too.  Plus it had $6.25 in quarters in it and 115 tokens.  Most of the tokens are from Games People Play or generic.  I also found a couple car wash tokens, a Chuck E Cheese, and one from some place called Cyber City Last Action Zone, which apparently is located in Nanaimo, Canada.  That token took a trip getting down here to Texas.

I wouldn't worry about the corrosion on that power supply section.  The Outrun cab I picked up had a similar situation.  Everything still worked, but just a bit dirty.  The part I would worry about is the water damage to the cabinet.  That particleboard swells and will crumble like feta cheese.  Nice find, though.  Arcade stuff around here lasts about 2 seconds unless it's viciously overpriced.

Random! I've lived in Nanaimo for 5 years now. Cyber City [Cyber----smurfy---?] closed down last year. Apparently back in the day the place was great, but neglect over time took it's toll. I went there twice, once to the mini golf that was falling apart and another time to the arcade. It was a pretty good arcade but not at all maintained. Many of the games I played had broken switches on the buttons and joysticks. When it finally went under they had a "garage sale" and were trying to sell off the games for 400-2000 each. I took a look through hoping they'd have a box of misc parts I could grab, but no such luck. They were selling this sweet 3 camera vhs security camera setup for $800  ::)

That's good to hear about the power supply section.  I didn't expect to see all that particle board though, my Rad Mobile cab from a few years later is 100% plywood.

I googled Cyber City and came across a article about it closing.  Most of the people in the comments section were ragging on it pretty bad.  There were a few supporters, but they were definitely outnumbered.

After Burners are often beat to heck. They were expensive when new and usually got run a long, long time. If you come up short for anything, let me know, I have a buddy who has a rough working one that he is on the fence about parting out.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Thanks man, I'll keep that in mind.  Hopefully I won't need much since I pretty much have 2 of everything.  This is my first time working on an arcade so I'm just doing my research now and trying to figure out what I've got and where to start.

There was a working one here on CL a few months ago for like $140. I wish I had the space for it, as I loved that game!

Just got back from picking up the other control unit assembly and front mask assembly.  The grip and start button aren't factory and the shifter decal is missing but other than that it looks good.

The screen on this one is clear which is cool cause this way I can compare the two and decide which one I like better.  Anybody know why there are two types of screens and which one is more common?  The manual I have only lists a "Screen, Clear Smoke."
