Any chance it has an nvidia card in it?  I vaguely recall there being an issue with newer versions of the driver on xp doing something similar. I think the solution is to keep trying older versions till it stops.

check the event viewer it should tell you exactly what caused the system to restart. like the one before me said it could be driver related.

roll back the drivers to older and older versions until it works.

there was some addition to the drivers that broke whatever mame was accessing in the drivers causing the crash.

Run an old mame version.

Install .55 and watch it run like a dream.

what he's stabbing at is that they added allot of junk to the newer mame versions that consequently require more horsepower to run. an older version will require less to do the same job (and possibly at the risk of a few games worth of incomparability.)

Just curious as to whether .55 was a number just pulled out of the air, or if that particular version is seen by the community as a 'sweet spot' for good compatibility with most old-school games before the mame team added something that started bloating it up and demanding more resources...

It is a sweet spot number. No major noticeable bugs in that version. The hardware requirements are very low (will run almost everything with a 500 mhz processor with few exceptions). By the time this version came around the new games being added mostly consisted of obscure titles and bloat. Sure you will miss a few things compared to running the latest and greatest, but for the most part you wouldn't notice you were missing anything unless you looked at a list of games side by side.

The same question and solution can be found in this thread:

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=111834.msg1283116#msg1283116

Since I am going to be running MAME on a 10yr XP computer, I would like to say a thank you for the advice of running .55

Thanks, that's interesting, I'll have to check that out.  I guess my next question would be would one need to track down the actual .55 romset or would it play nice pointed at the latest (limiting the front end to only show what was supported in .55 of course)...  They've occasionally reorganized things regarding rom dependencies and possibly naming, haven't they?

Yes, you would have to track down the .55 romset (or something close), which isn't nearly as difficult as you would think it would be. Most of them haven't actually changed since then, but enough of them have that it would be easier to start from scratch.
