Powering Home Speakers in a Juke Build
« on: June 21, 2012, 11:42:50 am »
I am beginning construction of my second jukebox. I have 2 large floor speakers sitting around doing nothing I'd like to use. These are big old school 3 way speakers, 8 ohm, 12" subs. I think they are rated at 200W. Anyway, I thought about buying a home stereo receiver/amp to power this set up. I am curious if anybody has a better way.

One reason I'm exploring other options here is that I's like to be able to wire a volume knob somewhere on the exterior of he cabinet. The trick is, it needs to be wired to the amp, not a windows volume controller. The reason is in my current set up, I split the output coming out of the sound card. One goes to the 2.1 speakers, the other to a wireless relay that is sent to a receiver that powers my outside speakers. With the volume controllers for the 2.1's and the receiver, I can run the box and the outdoor speakers at seperate levels. If I rely on a windows volume controller, I can't  do that. Obviously I'd prefer to avoid cracking open the receiver/amp and cutting into the existing volume control. So I'm putting it out there to the experts...maybe somebody makes exactly what I am looking for and I haven't found it yet.
You probably remember me from such films as `The Revenge of Abe Lincoln' and `The Wackiest Covered Wagon in the West'

You can have an inline volume control between the jukebox amp and the speakers.  Thus you set the amp level and then adjust externally. This looks to be the cleanest way of doing what you want.  These links may help you.  (although being Ehow its mostly advertisements)  :laugh2:
