monitor bracket removal
« on: June 16, 2012, 01:21:21 am »
So I need to squeeze a 36" crt into a showcase cab but the existing mounting brackets make it too wide.  How do I remove these things so I can weld new L brackets onto the metal band around the crt?  There are the holes that look like weld holes on each existing bracket but I'm not sure if that's what they are.  Do I just drill those holes out?

Here is a picture of the bracket.  If anyone has any ideas or has done this before I would appreciate the help.
Thanks,
Peja

i would recommend    NOT  messing with that band.

that band is there as a safety measure to keep the tube from exploding and chopping you into chunks. Don't mess with it.

mod your cabinet to fit the tube, not the tube to the cabinet.

Wow, I didn't realize removing just those brackets could result  with shards of glass sticking out of me.  I now have to decide if I want to make this beast fit into the cab or just disconnect the pedestal from the showcase and throw a 46" TV on the wall.  Takes away from the whole arcade look but may be my only options at this point without spending more money.

Thanks for the advice.

I did the showcase pedestal thing with TV on the wall for a while. It really isn't bad.

If the mounting is really THAT close then there is probably something else you can do the make it fit.

Mount the tube on 3/4" plywood (mounting ears on top), then mount that board on the opening to the monitor bay for your showcase box, and then build whatever framing and glass is needed to finish off the look.

I'm sorry to say I got lazy and for now am going the LCD route.  Until I get a bigger tv to throw on the wall, I am putting in a 32" LED tv that fits perfectly in the showcase opening.  Granted, I am giving up a lot of vertical screen real estate, but it didn't look that bad for the most part.  It's a temporary solution for sure but one that works for right now.

Thanks Paige

The widescreen never bothered me much when I used it, unless I ran a vertical game, it just seemed terrible then. Thus I never ran any vertical games when I was running that setup.
