The most comfortable Car Seat you've sat in
« on: May 07, 2012, 10:16:09 am »
I'm building my Battletech/Mechwarrior Online Pod and I'm looking for a seat now.  I want to go with a car seat simply for the easy track system they have to adjust for different people in said pod.  I'll be hitting up junkyards but I was looking for anyone's thoughts on what are some of the most comfortable car seats you've ever sat in so I can keep my eyes open for those at the junkyards.

Personally, I really liked the Nissan 2005 Altima's cloth bucket seats, just seems real soft/comfy and enjoyable.  Anyone else have good recommendations?

Any german luxury car leather bucket seat. Check the passenger seats. They will have much less wear and some will be manual while the driver's is electric.

Cool cool, keep em coming!  I found a junkyard with 3000 cars that lets customers peruse the wares, which I think is a must since I want to sit in it before buying it.

Do you think I should do leather or fabric?  With fabric, I would probably want to wash the shinikies out of it before sitting in it right?  Leather would probably be easier to clean.

Anything leather will be fine, just remember to take care of it so it doesn't dry out and crack and break other than that the criteria I would look for would be.

1 Plenty of adjustment
2 hiney depth "I've sat in plenty of sports car's that had super comfortable seats but even with the seat horizontal your butt sank in so far you were sitting laid back at an angle
3 Lack of body molding "Body molding is great when your taking a corner at speed and the rear end breaks loose not so much when your sitting in a traffic jam"

Other than those 3 for a stationary pod I wouldn't worry a whole heck of alot about it, you could take the seat in and have it re-cooshend with memory foam for just a couple hundred bucks and it would be more comfortable than your lazy-boy

Head to your local junk yard and try sampling the wares.
I found a nice BMW 3 series for only 60 bucks. Adjusts every which way you would ever want. Super comfy.

The base is a giant sub box which greatly to the gaming experience.

I hit up the junkyard that will let you actually walk around and didn't find too many positive possibilities.  My car guru friend is going to go back with me to help remove it from said car and we'll hopefully find something that has promise.  The cool part was the guy only wants 10 bucks as long as we remove it, not him.  So it's a no brainier trying to get something to work from this guys junkyard.

I think if I was to build a cab for driving games, it would have to have a racing seat.

There's cheaper obviously.  I saw a pair for sale on craigslist a year or so ago...the add said "I have to give the car back to my mother, so the seats have to go".  hahahaha.  He wanted a hundy for the pair..with rails.  For which cars?

Why, a Honda Civic, of course.   :laugh2:

You're not really going to find too many expensive, easily removed cosmetic parts like bucket seats in a junkyard, IMO.  That kind of stuff was stripped out before it even hit the lot.  Hard to argue with 10 bucks though.

That's what I said.  I'd love to "request" a seat from some of the junkyards that provide high quality but man, 10 bucks, I have to be able to find something that will work or work enough where I can re-pad/seat cover it with something decent right?

Best seat I have ever put my bottom in is by far the 2010 Mitsubishi Evo but the mid 90's Pontiac Bonneville leather seats are like recliners, sooo comfy

So went back to the junkyard and I wasn't finding anything that jived.  I found a great condition leather dodge minivan but if you remember, the bucket seats in the back have a 1 foot sub-assembly welded onto the seat frame and they don't have a mechanism for seat length adjustment.  I then found a black leather Jeep cherokee seat that looked pretty great but it was automatic powered, and I don't feel like rigging a 12volt 15 amp system to power the seat.  My friend and I talked and we thought we could power it with 1 amp if no one was sitting in it but the second someone forgets and sits down and tells it to move bam, chance of PS blowing.  We then considered a custom/retrofitted PS to drive it and thought it would be fine but with the car not turning on, and the bolts for the seat not in view, we'd have to find a way to move the seat so I could unbolt it from the chassis and all that "thinking" was starting to hurt my head.  I just wanted a damn manual seat.

Then I found it, the flow and stature was perfect.  Here is the original battletech pod's seat:

Here is the seat I found, out of a GMC conversion van:

It's comfortable, is stable and the moving mechanism is in fairly good condition.  For 10 bucks it just felt perfect.  So now I need to wrap my head around either re-leather upholstering it or a seat cover or using some type of acid wash to remove the color/paint stains.  I'd like it black but the red is kind of growing on me.  If I could get rid of the paint stains I might be okay with rocking red in there.  Would be kind of a cool color contrast but I'd have to have internals painted and fleshed out before I say whether it really works or not.

Thanks for all the advice/help.

congrats on the find.
It will probally clean up as good as new. Head to your local autoparts store and pick up some foaming upolstry cleaner. Spray it on, wait
and scrub it clean with a soft brush or rag.  If you want to change the color they sell upolstry paint in a spray can.

DUDE, perfect.  My call-sign in game will be "The Pink Cheetah".

My catchphrase -

Thanks Michelevit for what to start looking for.  I'll dig into that and see what I can find at the parts store.

Awesome.  I am all set.  Time to clean/paint.  Not sure if I'm going to stitch a logo onto the seat or not.  Would be cool.

Watch their movies...that hot chick from Extreme 4x4 on Spike is their spokesperson.  She's not uber pretty, but a chick that welds and can otherwise build a truck from an otherwise loose pile of tubing is HOT!!

Picked up Purple power and Duplicolor at lunch.  The auto guy basically got skiddish when I said I was going to use Purple power on vinyl/leather.  I was like "Settle down brother, the internets told me to do it"

yeah, it's pretty strong.  Let's put it this way...if you're into plastic modelling and you want to strip the enamel paint from a model car, just submerge it in purple power for about 24 hours and the paint will just be gone. :D

Just make sure that you've gotten all the PP residue off the vinyl using a bucket/water/sponge.

Purple Power is awesome.  Got rid of most of the crud and some of the paint.  Not all of the paint but that's okay cause then Duplicolor Black paint was even awesomer!  So seat is now ready to roll in the pod.  Going to take it to the pod this afternoon and set it in there.  Try it out and see how it fits/feels.

It's the best paint I've ever used.  Super fast and easy and it comes out of the can in like a 2-3 inch vertical spray just like an actual paint gun.  It moves with the leather and feels great.  I'm super happy with it.  Drys pretty fast too!
