All you mini builders and GPH users!
« on: April 22, 2012, 01:53:12 pm »
As I've mentioned other places I'll be doing a few companion builds to go with my current build and have been cruising through classics looking for good challenges to create.  SammyWI is helping me determine if the analog input on a caanoo can be configured to mimic good spinner polling on TRON.  Baring unforeseen roadblocks that should be well in hand.

I also want to tackle a multi-player build and what better classic multi to shrink down to 1:6 scale than Gauntlet?  I know that MAME4ALL can handle up to 4 players via USB joypads but the space issue will rear it's head awfully fast if I'm not careful.  Here are my thoughts and what I'm looking for are recommendations, prior experiences, and suggestions of other good classic cabs to miniaturize.

Use a USB hub and four ATmega32u4 USB dev boards which I'll have to figure out how to program to be recognized as plug and play joypad controllers.  If I can't program them like that then I'll need to figure out how to adjust MAME4ALL to accept programed inputs and just use a keyboard encoder.  Actually the second way listed is much easier so let's start there.  Anybody had any luck specifying controls in MAME4ALL on a GPH device and getting a keyboard encoder to recognize?

I think Gauntlet would be pretty kick ass with and totally unplayable with 8 hands crowded around a 5" wide CP.

Only if you add TMNT, XMen and The Simpsons to the mix.  Then and only then you'll achieve nirvana.  For the price of the hub + 4 of those boards, why not just an IPAC4?

I don't think the thing has a keyboard or accepts keyboard input.

That's the $64,000 question.  I'll get a good keyboard controller with enough inputs to populate what I'll need and start trying to get it recognized by the caanoo and by mame4all.  I'm also going to play around with getting mame4all to recognize a mouse input so I can do a mouse hack for a spinner since issues have been met on using the analog control for the same function.  If the encoder works I should only have to extend the screen and board hack two buttons which would make things simple.  That said I'm in the market for two more caanoos if anybody has an extra or doesn't want they one they have.

Great!  So when are you sending me the $64,000?  :notworthy:

It looks like the caanoo does support USB keyboards!
