MDF Question

I am currently planning my first cabinet.  I was planning to use MDF, but I am uncertain if I will be able to use T-Molding with MDF.  Is it possible or should I use hardwood?

Sorry for the simple question.  I worked in a cabinet shop for years, but I only finished cabinets.....never built them.

MDF is very T-molding friendly so no issue there.  I like MDF for the smooth no grain finish and it cuts very easily.  Watch out for the dust tho.

Thanks.  I am planning on painting the cabinet for now so I figured MDF was the right choice because I want a smooth finish.

Are you asking about plywood or actual hardwood?  If we're talking a true hardwood I would say no.  If you think MDF is heavy a cab made out of "hardwood" would be super heavy and would really do a number on your router bits.

MDF works great for T-Molding and painting.  It's a little heavy but build it so either the internals can be removed for transportation or with good grips and you'll be fine.

If it is in the budget, then MDO is > than MDF.  Regular plywood with a resin paper coating that takes paint extremely well.
