Slimline Cocktail
« on: January 26, 2012, 08:41:29 pm »
I was checking out some great cocktail builds but didn't come across any ultra portables.  I'm think along the lines of a decased netbook running an 17" or 20" laptop screen and using buttons/joys needing minimal clearance.  I guess the idea being you can set it up on the coffee table for a game and then slide it away, or take it to a pub for tournaments.  Toss a carrying handle on the side, get the whole thing battery operated (additional battery to support larger screen?) and clamp on a peice of smokey thick glass and you're good to go?

Anybody else done this and I'm just a ---smurfy--- surfer?  Utilitarian?  Fun?  Issues with the concept?  Suggestions for improved execution?  Just classics, just fighters?  Good project for a portable LEDwiz (how many LEDs can one run from USB power?)

I made a 50€ arcade station once, built from an IKEA LACK table. It is hollow, so all the stuff fit in.

I was thinking of the same thing the other day. but I do not want a table.  I want something like the X Arcade I can move about of just sit looking pretty.  I have seen similar builds but I am not sure if .37 or .84  Mame had cocktail switching.  I am desperate to make a version of this:

This make me think a bit, minus the drawer:

I have a spare 17" LCD and I could pop one of the Xbox1 I have floating into it.  How hard would be to make I wonder? The drawer idea is nice but I see myself gashing my wrists on the corners of the drawer.

Anyone care claim this build and tell us how it was constructed?  ;D

I just got a broken 7" Portable DVD player with AV in, and I am tempted to butcher a PSOne and marry it to this display for the Coleco Tribute Arcade, or I could use my Galaxy S as the display and hack a Zeemote.  I would have a awesome way to dock/charge my phone and play the games.

There were a few mini/tabletop coctail cabs going around a while back.

I was into it, but they just look so uncomfortable to play.  would be good if you could put them on a kitchen table and stand up, maybe.

I have been thinking the same thing for about a month now, and have measured the insides of an old Asus EEE 1000H and started designing on in Google sketch up. its still very early but i would love to here back any opinions about it.

Jigenjuke has been working on one, it's an awesome build, especially when you get into the scaled down coin door (made by crashwg):

iTea Guy - Welcome to the forums.  Always nice to flush out a lurker  ;) .  You're design is more in line with what I was thinking, flatter the better.  I'll definetly watch this one once you decide to put it up in the project announcements.  You are going to build it right?

Cheffo and Vigo - great examples, I think i saw that Galaga up on a youtube video - seeing the image jogged a loose memory.  I can't see myself walking into a pub with one of those tho I like them a lot.  I wonder what all I have to sacrifice to get much flatter.  I'm definetly thinking that the CP needs to be near flush with the playing surface.

Ark - If I knew a site to jail break my IPAD running 5.whatever it is I would be building that classic mini pac-man time meow.  May have to get a galaxy or another android pad just to play with.

I don't think that the viewing angle on the old 19" WS LCD I ripped out of an HP Pav will support this kinda build.  Any recommendations on monitors?  I was thinking about getting two replacement IPAD screens and mounting them together but this creates a whole other slew of technical issues and doesn't get the size I'm looking for.

Very low profile (some parts are not as integrated as they could be)

That's pretty sweet build wise.  Agree that speakers are best inside the cab and I'm not crazy about a few details but all that is incidental to the concept.  I think it would be hard to get much slimmer than that without the control decks being higher than the screen level, which would be a no-go.  Chrome T-molding is always a crowd pleaser though. I want to see iTea Guy's get built.  That had pretty nice lines.  I may just have to shelve my next plan for one of these though, they're starting to grow on me.

Remember viewing angles, vertically for the players, in this LCD application.

Looks like Absinthe successfully jailbroke the IPAD2 5.0.1 about 2 weeks ago.  Currently the only installer available is for mac but the pc release should be forthcoming.  Providing everything goes well on that front I think I'll do a dual build, one will be a custom Coleco and the other will be a super slimline cocktail - both running wii-hacked CPs.  Don't want to get to far into the design until I've got the Ipad squared away as far as emu is concerned but I'm pretty excited about the prospects.

By the way, Franco, thanks for digging up that awesome portable 4p bartop, that thing is totally the tits.

@Franco - What is the link to that Radioactive portable cab?  That looks cool.  The link you posted seems to point to a different cab.
Thanks!
