Which Pot do I get?
« on: January 11, 2012, 02:35:03 pm »
Hi guys,

I decided to go the pot route on the volume knob on my cab. I was asking somebody for a pot and he asked me 'what value is it?'

I had no idea what he meant by this but I guess it has to do with the powering of the unit? I am going to be using the pot as a volume knob and I want to use it for this system:
http://reviews.cnet.com/pc-speakers/cambridge-soundworks-soundworks-pc/1707-3179_7-30112039.html

The subwoofer will go in the cabinet and the speakers mounted at the top. There is a separate volume dongle that I want to wire up to a pot. Can anyone tell me which pot to buy for this? I want the capability of 2.1 sound.

Thanks!

If you are going to extend the existing volume control that comes with the speaker set you will have to take apart the volume control to find out what the value is.   If you take it apart and measure from outside tab to outside tab you will have the resistance of the pot required to replace it.   Or you could relocate the volume control that comes with the speakers to someplace convenient for you to access it.

Sativa for head high, Indica for chill body relaxing.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

Sounds like a chat room conversation going through a translator LOL.

Okay, I opened up the volume control and I saw a connector inside. There wasn't too much writing on it. It said:

CSW
PCB -1730

And then a little further down it said 02 HB.

Is it a 3 pin connector? Measure the resistance on the 2 outside pins. The middle pin should be the wiper.the highest resistance you can measure is the value youre looking for. The values are usually in the kohms. Standard values are 1 k, 5 k and 10k.

You can view the images of the inside of the volume container here:

Sorry, I tried to get it clearer but that was the best I could do. There are the left and right speaker wires each have three small wires that hook into the little circuit board. There is no indication of any numbers other than the ones I provided above. Its just three small wires on each side going into a white plastic piece connected to this brown circuit board.

I cant make out any of those pictures. Did you take them with an actual digital camera? Most cameras have a "Macro" mode, that allows you to take good quality closeups. If you take some good closeup pictures I could probably tell you which connection points to measure.

Okay, I've taken some more pictures and they are much more clear. One thing I realize that I did wrong in my last post was to say that the two wires go out to speakers. That was incorrect. The speakers go into the subwoofer which powers the system. The volume knob attaches to the subwoofer and the computer. As you will see in the photos it says "to sub" and "from source."

Does it look anything like the picture I posted? Pictures from the side of it don't really help. Can you show me the soldered side of the circuit board? How many pins are coming from that round black disk (volume knob) going to the circuit board. Did you try measuring the k ohms? its impossible to determine what kind of pot you need just by looking at it. Unless it was marked.

Looking at circuits from other Soundworks remotes the pot is probably a dual gang 50K.   This is in the line out circuit so the higher resistance is probably correct.   It needs to be dual to control the left and right signal.

It needs to be a log pot too, correct?

A log or audio pot would be a good idea but can be expensive.  A linear pot can be used but the volume change would be linear and not logarithmic as experienced by our ears so the volume control would not sound even but this might be acceptable if it is not used often.
