Sound issues with groovymame

After testing with my Arcadevga 7000, i've found an ati radeon 9250 use with calamity 6.5 but always the problem! With groovymame i have sound craps with neogeo's game, pacman, ... And when i close groovymame, in the dosbox, i can see that the game speed is about 97-98% (neo-geo) and 85%(pacman) or 102%(cps2). Icanot see slowdown, just with the sound, same thing with Cabmame! I think it just with game that don't have real 60 Hz refresh rate.

Ps: i use a p4 2.5ghz with 1gb ram

There's definitely somethig odd going on with your system. The -soundsync patch relies on using a stream buffer with the DSBCAPS_CTRLFREQUENCY flag activated... maybe this feature is not supported by your souncard/drivers (weird).

I'm testing a completely different implementation for the -soundsync patch that should work for both Windows and Linux and might solve your issue. Hopefully I gather some time to make a new buid with this and other changes I have in mind.

In my mind it doesn't come from the soundcard because i've test with a soundblaster pci 512 and with the AC'97 of the motherboard. I've just test with the classic version of Mame, and i have the same problème :/

Same problem with mame/cabmame and with arcadevga(without "only 60hz" in avres) or with radeon 9250 + calamity + groovymame :/

Sounds like you have some performance issues with your system that aren't directly related to GroovyMAME. For what it's worth, I was having some stuttering problems (video and audio) with my test system (an old Core 2 Duo that was previously used as a HTPC) and spent some time tweaking it today to try to sort it out. I uninstalled a whole bunch of stuff that was no longer needed (virus scanner, media software, etc.) and now the problems have gone. Played a bunch of games tonight and everything was perfect. :) I can't say exactly what fixed my particular issue (since I went to town on my system) but my point is that there must be something causing your problem. The trick is finding exactly what it is. ;)

Aside from retro gaming, I use computers for audio production. I've spent a lot of time over the years chasing down the cause of dropouts and glitches. One of the most useful tools I ever found is DPC Latency Checker <http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml>. Once you tweak your system (through disabling processes, getting all your drivers in order, etc) and get green bars on the DPC graph, your audio should be problem free. That's my experience, at least.

Of course, your problem might be something entirely different... :dunno

I agree with Paradroid, there's something else going on there, probably CPU related. There might be a combination of different issues.

For instance, if GroovyMAME is producing the right modelines (check logs) neo-geo games should run very close to 100%. Pacman slowdown is normal due to having 288 lines when rotated.

There is nothing special about 60 Hz modes that should keep the sound perfect, unless there's something completely odd we're not considering in the equation. Just by chance, have you got a secondary PC monitor attached when doing these tests?

No i just have the tv ( vga to scart ). My computer has just been formated, Xp cleen with latest drivers! And with the arcadevga if i Check only 60hz in Avgares, there isn't any sound crap so i do not think it come from the computer.

When you run AVGAres, it produces lots of inis that go into the INI folder inside MAME's folder. I just wanted to make sure that those inis are not left there after that interferring with GroovyMAME's behaviour.

Anyway, please send me a log (groovymame romname -v -md 4 >romname.txt) of one of neo-geo games, that might help me figure out what's going on.

Hi White_widow,

Now, I think I understand what's happening.

In both cases, neo-geo and capcom, the -soundsync option is being internally disabled because GroovyMAME considers it's not necessary to have it enabled, because the modeline's calculated refresh is close enough to the desired refresh. This behaviour was designed as it is at some point, but now I see it's a problem because it makes impossible for the user to force -soundsync in these situations.

When GroovyMAME disables -soundsync, it's assuming that your CPU is be fast enough to emulate the game. The problem comes when this is not true, as it seems to be your case:

- neogeo: 97.08% -> sound issues
- capcom: 100.03% -> sound ok

For some reason the neogeo games can't get emulated at full speed in your computer. Try to prove this wrong by using regular MAME 0.144 pressing F11 to check the speed.

If it ends up being CPU related, enabling -triplebuffer for those games may help improving performance.

Strange that a pentium 4 with 512mo(test with 1go) isn't enough powerfull for neogeo. I must test with Mame .144 with ddraw, hwstretch 0, switchres 1 ?

I have test and the same result with kof2003, but I will end up believing that it's my computer because with games like kof 98 (smaller roms) it perfect.

Try kof2003 with GroovyMAME and the -triplebuffer option, it should make a better use of your CPU, at the cost of some scroll glitches.

Pacman's slowdown is of different nature: 288 progressive lines can't refresh at 60.60606 Hz on a standard resolution CRT. Try running it rotated, it should reach 100% for sure.

I have found an Athlon 64X2 3800+ with 1 go, is it a good choice? Can I use a classic 32bits Xp with the 64bits Athlon?

I dare to say that's more than enough for most games. You can use XP-32 just fine, but if you can get a copy of XP-64 you'll get even better overall performance for MAME.

Yes it's normal, because you're v-syncing to this video mode:

I finaly found an intel dual core 1.6ghz with 1go ddr2 and an Ati x550, I have quickly test with this computer and it seems to be better than with my old configuration. Thanks a lot to Calamity/Caskad/Paradroid.

I can confirm that with my Phenom X2 550 I've had no such issues with those games.

MAME is what it is and though groovymame and Calamity's drivers will give you better results in a cab than any other version of MAME your PC still needs to be up to spec.

That said if you run vert games in horizontal you are not only changing the resolution you are changing the refresh too so yeah, you might as well be running vanilla MAME since you'll encounter all the problems groovymame and Calamity's drivers are built to overcome.

I'm having similar issues... the sound is warping and wobbling and such (pitch shifting) on a constant level with certain games, most prominently Street Fighter II': Champion Edition. Also, after the title screen ends, the demo attract sequence has delayed start of a few seconds (before the character select music plays) versus right away like the original. I've checked with another MAME (MAMEUI) and these issues don't exist there. Thanks for any help.

running 32bit XP, 2.2GHz and 3gb of RAM

GroovyMame synchs the sound to the vsync.  If your CPU isn't fast enough to have accurate vsync timing, then the sound is going to be off, as GroovyMame locks to vsync.

What sort of 2.2ghz CPU?  That number by itself is meaningless -- Intel Core?  Core Duo 2?  The architecture makes a huge difference.  Running 64-bit, for example, will increase your speed by as much as 30% for MAME.

For some comparison, my quad-core Llano A8-3870K at 3.0ghz is pushed fairly hard by Street Fighter 2.  I attach a screenshot of Puzzle Bobble running on my cabinet -- 60% of one core.  If you don't have enough head room on a single core to handle the spikes, you're going to hear audio issues.

I am having this same problem with a AMD 64 3000+ and XP 64, 1GB ram, and Arcadevga 2 (Ati 9200).   I'm seeing 100% or minor, occassional drops to 90+% occassionally.     I feel like I shouldn't be having problems with this rig, despite how anchient it is.  I'm just trying to play 2D games - capcom/ neo geo/ etc.  No 3D.
