That apple lets a port of MAME go out on the app store right before Xmas?

No as long as it doesn't contain any malware, I should not see why not.

There are free roms out for playing Mame with it.  Its not a Playstation Emulator, which needs a copyrighted bios.

I'm suspicious why anyone would code Mame for the ipieceofshitetphone, when Android is a more superior platform, cheaper, faster, larger market share and you don't have to hold it funny to get a signal.. :blah:  :blah:

Which platform has the larger market share?

For the record MAME was ported to Symbian in 2004.  :P

(I'm also shocked that Windows mobile used to have that big of a share)

The main reason is that until the iPhone most Smart Phone users received their phones via their employer.  Most employers used Blackberry (RIM) or Windows Mobile because it plays nice with Exchange.

I think its part of a strategy to knock out the new handhelds from Sony and Nintendo (actually I don't, but crazy conspiracy theories are fun)

Amazing the difference five years makes. You know Apple pulls out a little more of their hair every quarter when the new numbers are released...

Now if only I can get my company to stop buying these flippin' RIM phones and start getting Androids!

I don't know how much market share matters. If you count RIM, which I don't, Apple never had a majority of the market share. The difference I see in the apps is how much iOS users spend on Apps vs Android. I have an Android phone, but I've bought way more apps for my iPad. Apps are getting better for Android, but if I were to release an app today with the purpose of making money and could only release it on one platform, it would be on the iOS.

Also, I wish we could see how many of those Android phones are the piece of crap low end can't-do-crap models.

Android is a superior platform due to the fact that it just works.  I do not need a $500 (well my galaxy S did cost £499) phone to let me talk to my friends.  Heck my first iPhone cost $300 and I got two and sold them for £1000 each while I was away on holiday.  Not because it was a ooh ahh phone, just so I can have a free holiday.  I had a XDA that did all of that and played Mame.  No Android has a large market share due to build quality. Everywhere I look I see Sammy phones.  They rock and will continue to snub Apple and gain ground.  My good mate is an Apple Fanboi.  He just bought a Galaxy 2 as his 3GS started playing up.  His first comment: Wow!

It is also nice to see that I am always right too.  ;D

Pfft. "Just works" ---my bottom---. I had a Droid and after a year, half the applications released for Android slowed my phone down or plain didn't work. There's too many different "flavors" or the OS for applications to work consistently across the different phones.  Granted the newer phones are getting better, but I still see problems (crashing, freezing). I was so annoyed by it so I went with the iPhone.  That "just works".

I still like Android, just not for my phone...

I like android, and enjoy my Samsung Galaxy Tab, but I must respectfully disagree with your assertion that Android "just works."  Quite the opposite!

I am on my second Android phone. The first was a Droid Eris, and I hated it. It was too small and underpowered. Now I have the Galaxy S II (Sprint version), and I am very impressed. This is the first phone I have ever really liked, and it works very well. 4.5" screen, 1.2GHz dual core processor, and 2 -3 days on the battery. I think the iPhones look clunky compared to this one. Even the Apple fans at school seem to like this one. Android has come a long way in just a couple of years. If they keep improving it, I don't think anyone will be able to beat it.

it just works

It seems the platforms are different enough that one group thinks their phones are superior and "just works" while the other phones are clunky and hard to use. Funny.

Apple had the superior product for years. It took years before a competing product could emerge. Apple had the chance to completely dominate by releasing their phone on all carriers. Instead, they opted for a close ecosystem to maximize profits and left the door open. Now we have 2 in the top spot with RIM and Windows Phone fighting it out for 3rd.

I think what we can all agree on is that Apple needs Android and Android needs Apple. Them competing benefits all of us.

I just cancelled my data plan and threw my EVO in the workout room for netflix. More $$$ in my pocket less stress in my life.

Android:

Interesting. According to The Economist, there were 414,852 apps from Apple vs 237,199 for Android as of Q2 2011. Which just paraphrases Ark Aders question to the more general form of 'why'?

I like IOS but it is not user friendly. Two weeks ago I got lost in Lancaster. Nice town but easily able to get turned around. Luckily I was with a mate and I had to be at a location in ten minutes.  We both got out our phones. He has an iphone, me with a Galaxy S.

I had the coordinate for the meeting and was perusing engadget while he was trying to get the information up.

The advertising on tv is lies.  Iphone is cool but not fast AND functional.  Just functional if you are prepared to wait. That is why you see people glued to their phones while walking. It takes forever to do anything useful.

Still trying Android (freebee from work, I hate mobile phones), but until I decided to dumbphoniefy it, life was plain horrible on Android. Now I just have a phone with texting, calling, and photographing, and still 30% stinks of it, but at least that is better than 80% garbage software.

Oh, and Android might be biggest, iOS turns over 6 times as much on apps compared to Android.

If we're talking "platform" and not just smartphones, don't tablets have to be included?  And if we are considering "success" or "better" as having more marketshare then last time I checked the iPad had almost 85 percent of the tablet market.  Actually it wasn't until the Kindle Fire that anyone wanted Android-based tablets and that is just due to the bargin-basement price (which is killing Google financially as it bypasses the Google Android Marketplace).

Another point is that last time I checked, Google could only push bug fixes for a major release and not the entire major release to devices due to the varying hardware configurations.  Meaning, if a device shipped with Gingerbread it could not be upgraded to Honeycomb or Ice Cream Sandwich.  Since Apple controls the hardware platform they push major iOS releases to all legacy devices when it makes sense (i.e. the processing power of the device is sufficient).  It is this control of the hardware that makes iOS much more stable than Android and why iOS devices have MUCH, MUCH better battery performance than comparable Android devices (recent iOS 5 location bug notwithstanding - and fixed by Apple).  Many of the new Android devices can't make 4 hrs of talk-time in "real-world" use (i.e. corporate) unless you put on some giant battery pack which makes the phone heavy and clumsy.

Just my 2 cents....btw, I'm not a fanboy for either platform but have evaluated both platforms extensively for work.  I actually use a piece of crap RIM device :)

I like IOS but it is not user friendly.

For you that may be true, and for others, but not for everyone. I hear it from both sides proclaiming the other platform isn't intuitive. It doesn't mean it's not user friendly, it just means it's not ark_ader friendly.

If someone asks me if they should switch from X to Y. I tell them to try it out because it might be more easy or more difficult. It's a very personal thing and citing an example of what happened to you and another guy is far from definitive proof. There is no way I'd say "Definitely get an Android. It's user friendly." I have users still on Blackberry because it suits there needs and I'd take anything over a RIM device.

I stand corrected and informed.  ;D

Actually I spent a fair amount of time on my Hannspad android Tablet.

The only interface bugbear was the keyboard.  I have a small deadzone near the bottom and I cannot always hit the spacebar. I bought a 1.99 app for a new keyboard and I have been typing stuff all day.  So a small purchase can make a huge difference to a device.

My brother has had Blackberrys for years. I thought they were okay until the later smartphones came out. I have a Samsung Epic. It isn't perfect, but I love it in general. I want to write something down, I swype up a memo. Same with a text or text draft. I want to look something up, I do. It won't replace my desktop (or laptop if used that as my main computing rig), but out and about, it's a wonder. I've been waiting for this kind of tech since the early 80s.

Android for the most part is fine for me. I can't easily customize some things....like getting rid of *Sprint Nascar*, or any of that dumb ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---, and in some cases there are too many features to keep track of/play with, but it does well enough.

I don't have any more apps than I need. I don't ever play games on my phone, or read books, or stream radio, anything stupid like that. (Mostly stupid, because those things cost money, when they shouldn't.)
