How mad do you get when playing?
« on: December 22, 2011, 11:43:01 am »
I've been playing arcade games since the dawn of time (geezer alert). I've seen all kinds of crazy dudes go ape. And I have to admit that (more in the past) I've displayed my share of vented frustration. So, the question is, just how mad to you get (at your worst) when playing arcade games?

I have a poll breaking down the pissed off categories on my blog...

I went with hit or kick, but normally I hit my forehead and cuss. This is only really during Galaga though.

Yesterday I tried to get through Castlevania (playchoice).  Did I get dumber/slower, or is that second to last stage a complete ---smurfette---?  I had to censor myself in front of my kids multiple times as I slammed my fists on the control panel.

No, I never finished it.  Rage-quit.

I'm pretty non-emotional, my wife calls me a robot.  I don't get overly upset by much, nor to I get overly excited.  So I chose "I never really get mad" which looks to be in the minority.  I'm very competative, I just don't get emotional about it.

I would probably get angrier if I wasn't totally awesome at all video games.

Oddly, I rarely get mad at Arcade games. The last time I was about.... 8? Got frustrated at Tail Gunner (I think). I get more pissed at console and PC games and the oft shoddy programming. Usually at Valve's crap.

The worst was when I popped Ninja Gaiden (I think it was NG) out of the NES and flung it out an open window. Unfortunately it wasn't mine.

I've thrown many a controller (and still do, but not with the newer systems - too expensive). But arcade games I rarely get mad at since I usually only play "score attack" types of games (i.e. no real ending except for a glitch like DK kill screen, etc.) on the cab and don't need to "reach" a certain point.

I go insane with rage when my friend comes over to play Marvel vs Capcom 2, and he uses Magneto, Psylocke, and Sentinel, and pretty much beats the crap out of me with unbridled glee. It sickens me when he beats me with serv bot, roll, and mega man. he is THAT good. I get SO PISSED. I feel like there is nothing I can do to get better either....  :timebomb:
Pictures are overrated anyway.

Pretty damn mad when my wife is doing better than me.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again

When I was a kid, I once punched out my tv while having a bad game of kangaroo on the 2600. I punched the screen hard enough that it just stopped working.
Of course I ain't about to punch the machine I've put so much time into building.

atari 2600 combat when playing tanks sometimes when your opponent hit you your tank would go spinning across the screen and then land right in front of your opponents gun sometimes 2 or 3 times in a row, always made me boil over

Been a long time, but I used to get mad playing Atari Combat PingPong tanks and someone would keep spawn shooting me. I used to get pretty mad at that damn bat in adventure.

Back in the 90s, I bought the original issue of Flux magazine.  Inside was a story about how someone got so mad at SF2 that he put his fist through the screen, got arrested, had to pay tons of money blah blah.

~2007 I tried slamming a 4lb hammer through the front of a few monitors.  It bounced off without evening chipping the glass.  They were tossed in the air into dumpsters and the ones that didn't hit neck first bounced into the air like super balls.

 :P

I heard a similar story about a windshield, so I took a big hammer and was taking some whacks at a windshield in a junkyard. It may be possible, but I don't believe someone could put their fist through a windshield unless they got into an accident at 60+ mph.

A couple of weeks ago we had an enormous mosquito surge in Houston.  I was swatting them with my open palm against the windshield in my car while driving, not even that hard mind you, and one of my swats shattered my windshield.  There is a spiderweb crack about 12" in diameter in all directions.

Glass is a funny substance. I've taken solid (non-tempered) glass balls and happily bounced them on concrete as a child without a single chip yet I've witnessed toughened, tempered and chemically doped glass shatter without warning.

The glass in a car windshield is not intended to not shatter or break but designed to be retained by the layering when it does break. And, if by chance, the layers don't function as intended, any glass that does get loose is intended to be about the size of a fingernail. I can easily see how swatting a car window would crack it, ask popsicle if there's any jewelery on the fingers. If you've driven a car on the road any length of time, you know perfectly well that the size of the pebble isn't what causes glass to break.

I'm not a controller-thrower, but I do get pretty vocal.  Usually when the computer is obviously cheating, like my "almost-perfect" Madden '94 season, where the computer decided in the penultimate regular season game that there was just no way that I was going to go undefeated.  The Mario Kart and NBA Jam (got kicked out of an arcade for my language concerning NBA Jam once) shenanigans do this to me too.

But, this is my favorite personal video game story ever.  There was this game for the NES called Street Fighter 2010.  It bears ZERO resemblance to the capcom series, trust me.  That game was one of the worst auto-fire offenders ever.  If you had the NES Advantage or something similar, the game was a complete cakewalk, but if you didn't, you'd be lucky to get past the first stage.

My cousins and I took this as a personal challenge, and one of them one day was having a complete Rain Man day on that game.  No auto-fire, but he was just zoned in on it that day.  He gets to the final stage, and loses all his lives in about 20 seconds of total gameplay.  He went total balls-out crazy, and after throwing the controller and uttering some choice words (I was 12, so he was probably 9), he ran up to the 29" zenith floor console and bit the corner of the TV.  Hard enough that he chipped a front tooth.

We still give him crap for it to this day.

bwah ha ha haha!  :laugh2:

NES, Silver surfer. yet another auto-fire offender. must have mashed that controller button 10 billion times before I bought an auto-fire pad.

I once hit the protective glass while playing Rastan (that evil stage 4) so hard that the glass shattered. I started bleeding too, but fled the scene before I could get caught. I was 15.

About 2 years ago, I was competing in Thunder Dragon 2 and that announcer in the game got so much on my nerves that I actually yanked/pulled my Seimitsu LS-32 very hard upward and broke the e-clip and actuator. Luckily, I had spare parts at home as I the cabinet was sold and waiting for pick-up.  :banghead:

In regards to glass and it's unpredictability, when I was somewhere around 10 I threw a hissy fit over something and attempted to rip the rear view mirror from my parents Jeep Cherokee.  It came off in addition to breaking the windshield.

In regards to glass and it's unpredictability

last year we went to one of our school locations for our yearly clean-up. I don't have real great vision so i normally i pull out the tempered glass from a game and set it on top of my foot. i then tilt the glass so the corner is touching, pull my foot out, and then set down the other corner. that way i don't run into the floor with the glass and break it.

only this time when i touched the corner of the glass to the floor, there must have been some grit or something on the tiles, cause the whole thing exploded in my hands.  :banghead: the boss (who was on the other side cleaning pinballs) looks over and i'm literally frozen in place holding nothing and a bajillion glass chips scattered in about a 20 foot radius around me.

But let's admit, that wasn't your first swat.  You have probably smashed upwards of 700+ a year if you are a true Houstonian.  Any windshield older than 3 years is getting pretty weak.  Luckily we have Mexicans to replace the windshield for cheap.
