What are all the consoles you have owned?
« on: October 11, 2011, 11:57:31 am »
Trying to get a grip on what percent of us owned each of the popular consoles.  Click all the ones you had/have in my poll here...

 (not every console is listed)

Why do you include the Arari 2600, but not the original Atari system?

Early system I owned but is not on your listing: Bally

I'd only played Wizard of Wor on the Bally, never saw in arcade.  After I played it in MAME recently I can see that the Bally version was balls on accurate!!  :woot  Good system, some BASIC programming enabled as well.

The 2600 is the "original Atari system".

If you want to get technical...the original Atari was called the Atari VCS, but was renamed the 2600 when the 5200 came out so that people would know the 5200 is the superior model.

Hmm,
What the hell did I have then?  Parents didn't by me the original Atari system, much to my dismay, we got the Bally, which again, was pretty cool but didn't have the name cache of the Atari.  But later on we DID have an Atari, but I'm pretty sure it had a keyboard, and I thought THAT was the 2600.

Hmm... Searching net...

Looks like I had an Atari 800 or 600 or 1200...

I would think that the numbers would be successive and the numbers would go up with each new release... Guess I learn something new today! :P

So,
I answered the Poll incorrectly, did NOT have a 2600, had a later Atari with Keyboard not listed on yer poll.  Have a nice day! :P

Also want to consider the Sears Telegames or whatever BS name they had for it a separate system? VCS/2600/telegames Is the same thing with different names, and pointless to split up. It'd actually screw up the poll.

You are missing a bunch of Atari systems on your list  5200, 7800, Jaguar and if you are going to put 3DO then you have to put Philips CDi   ;)

I owned 2 slot 2 machines, 1 slot 4 machine, and I still own 2 AES systems =)

I didnt check gamecube, but I have a Wii, so doesnt that mean I technically have a GC?

Can not do a poll that omits Atari 5200.

Best memory ever!  Every X-mas we'd get presents by the tree in the living room.  The fireplace was in the TV room though so our stockings were there.  Typically, batteries for new toys, etc were in the stockings.  This year though we had some 5200 games stuffed in our stockings.  I was confused as a young boy.  Santa did not bring us an Atari.  Then my brother pointed out that there was gift hidden behind (what recollection tells me) was a rocking chair.  I remember having an eyes wide open moment.  I don't remember much beyond seeing that large present sitting behind a chair.   But it was one of the best moments of my life.  We opened it and I would have to say that that moment was better than anything ever before.  Santa was real for that time in my life.

For what it is worth, my parents did not get us much but they made us happy on some occasions and when they made us happy, the rarity of the gift made it that much more special.  For that, I thank them.

I know, but for the sake of the argument, no matter what the name, it was the same system as the first.

Currently after 170 votes, the PS2 is slightly ahead of the NES, then the SNES, PSX and Wii.  I'm a little surprised that the PS2 has had more owners than SNES or even the Atari VCS/2600.  Also surprised that 75% of us have owned a Wii.  12 lucky bastard have owned a Neo-Geo, nice!

I forget the actual names of the divisions within Atari, but they had a division that developed the home computers (like the 800) and an entirely separate division that did the consoles (2600, 5200, 7800).  As a result, the "numbers" attached to the product names only have significance within the respective product lines.  In other words, "5200" denotes an upgrade from "2600" but has no significance when compared to "800" (which, incidentally, had a very similar architecture to the 5200, but that's beside the point).

That standard doesn't even hold true within the same model lines... After 1200XL they went to the XE Series, which started with the 65XE.
I went from an 800XL to 130XE, pretty much the same computer with a new case and more RAM.

Great idea!

But the Playstation percentages just depress me.  Sony's the worst thing that ever happened to video gaming.  Their constant attempts to replace PC Gaming,  barring games from being ported,  their attempts to force exclusivity through obtuse hardware design (Which the PS3 is hands down the posterboy for that behavior).  Alot of the current state of gaming is because of Sony's agenda,  diversity started it's death spiral when the Playstation era began.

Now today we can have any game we want,  so long as the only game we want is a Shooter,  and we'll get a grand total of about 8 hours of gametime out of it if we're really lucky.

I don't know if you're talking about PS3 games only, but if it's gaming in general then that's just not true, man.

It seems like every genre is experiencing more development than ever, especially if you count in indie games, xbox live arcade, psn games, steam, and stuff that comes out for phones and portables.

Name any genre, I bet we can name 5 great games that came out in the last 5 years for it.

I don't think there has really been 5 great traditional RPG's in the last 5 years. (non-MMO, Turn based)

Star Ocean: The Last Hope was a decent turn-based, non-MMO RPG. The voice acting was a little weak, especially compared to Till The End of Time, but the game mechanics were pretty solid and there was lots and lots of side-quest action. Umm...I'm sure we can come up with 4 more.

Okay, I'll concede your point. :D

The most recent Final Fantasy games were pretty disappointing. I thought that FFXII was going in the right direction with its changes - semi-turn-based, overland combat, great character customization, and the Gambit system for programming AI actions was genius - but FFXIII scrapped everything and went back to Dragon Warrior 4-style "My AI Companions Are Complete Retards" combat system.

But re: SNES vs PS2 numbers...I bet a fair number of us had to get our parents to buy the SNES console. But when PS2 came out, many of us probably had the cash monies to buy consoles ourselves, and multiple different consoles. There wasn't the Sega vs Nintendo decision like in the early years - you simply bought them all. :)

Final Fantasy 12
Dragon Quest 9
Mother 3
Final Fantasy IV: The After Years
The Last Remnant
Blue Dragon
Persona 3

Just off the top of my head and little bit of looking around wikipedia.  There's a lot of RPG development going on in the portable platforms.

Well, FF12, Mother 3 and Persona 3 were all release more than 5 years ago. (Although, I read that Persona3 is pretty good game. Mother 3 was just the game from 1994 that was never released. I would not call all those games great either.

You could probably look and find at least 10-20 rpgs on the handhelds that are good, but the are mostly rehashes, sequels and spin-offs. My point is I don't think there has been much that is great on it's own merits.

I never tried any of the star ocean games, but this one does look pretty good. Maybe I'll give it a go. :)

Microvision
Colorvision
VideoPac G7200
Vectrex
NES
Game Gear
PS2

5 were missing in your list, so I post it here

I still own them, but the Microvision's display is dead, and the Game Gear's one is almost dead. Damn old LCD tech!
The built in CRT ones (Videopac and Vectrex) still rock though.

since when is a portable console not a console
console = changeable games as far as I know.

I see it is a language thing too. Europeans trash everything on one heap, where Americans see the TV as important part to connect with. In the American biased Wikipedia kind of fashion a Vectrex and Videopac are no consoles too ;). The wikipedia Handheld console section is more my coffee on the other hand ;)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handheld_game_console

For me a handheld is for example the 4-bit toys Nintedo made under the game and watch label.
