remove click from switches all together!
« on: August 31, 2011, 01:27:36 am »
I think ive found a way to do it!  replace the metal pad inside the switch with a silicone conductive pad from an old gamepad button/dpad membrane.  Tried it on a switch tonight and its dead quiet but only sees 1/3 pushes :(  I think i need to make it a bit thinner as im getting 2.33ohms resistance (i think it sould be 0)

Will experiment more tomorrow

I wonder if you could find a conductive pad like that where the resistance varied with pressure over a large enough span such that you could treat it like a 1D analog input (using a uhid or something). Then you could use regular push buttons like gas/break pedals, but still have the regular pushbutton action for everything else.

Leafs are completely silent, but not available for your modern joysticks.

But, I recently got some Zippy switches that are significantly softer and lighter than cherry switches. Under the CP they are virtually silent. I believe all the usually suspects (vendors) carry them, groovygamegear (though re-branded with Groovy, they look very similar to Zippy's), and Paradise Arcade.

I put them in a couple Seimitsu's and they have a very awesome feel. With a sub-20gram actuation force, my joysticks have a little less actuation resistance, accompanied with a round gate they make for a great shooter/shmup experience.
Next I'm going to put them in some JLF's and see how they feel for Versus Fighting games.

You're fine.  The micro-leaf is still a switch based joystick and the comments above about leafs not fitting modern joysticks don't apply.

I've used both the paper pad as mentioned in the link above and leaf switches that fit great in most cherry switch applications and both work well.  One or the other should work for your application.
