EDIT: Yes it is still in Windows 7. I set a shifted button to be CTRL and i can easily find the cursor

I finally got around to upgrading to windows 7

So time to use the great info on BYOAC yet again!
Everything worked great!
I was able to take permission of the system files and move them without having to go through Linux live CD (which is great cause I couldn't get that to work)
First I made copies to the desktop edited them in Resource Hacker
Then I just right-Clicked the individual files in there original location one at a time selected take permission and changed the names to back them up.
Then dragged the new ones I edited in from the desktop
Reboot and good to go

I'm referring to these files from step 4-9
C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll
C:\Windows\System32\en-US\winlogon.exe.mui   (the directory may be different if you didn't install as English-US (en-US - get it?)
C:\Windows\Branding\Basebrd\basebrd.dll

Hey All,

I'm having issues with Step 9.  I try to drag the files back to the systems32 folders and get the access denied error, so I installed a copy of Linux Mint and am in it now.  I dont have access to any of my windows 7 folders or files...can someone help me out with this?  Only piece i'm struggling with

EDIT:  Just figured it out...instead of getting linux and doing it that way..I just booted into safe mode and dragged the files over...all set!

It appears that if you have Win 7 WITHOUT the service pack you need to disable something called "Windows Gadget Platform"

Hey guys I have figured out everything except this step. The mouse pointer is gone everywhere except for about 2 seconds after the windows boot screen and before the windows login screen. I think I might not be doing the step below correctly. There is also a spinning circle next to the pointer for that same spilt second.

You may also need to add an extra key (as extended string) for 'Busy'.

I’ve followed your tutorial verbatim; Windozes 7 is hidden fine and everything looks great. One issue I’m still having problems with is I just can’t get the front end (AdvMENU 2.6) to launch… Spent all weekend on it; any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

And  (error 1) YES I did that… I checked and I can launch AdvMENU from the desktop shortcut (and launch AdvMAME games) on the desktop just fine. Quadruple checked the .rc – they’re OK… Seems like the regedit winlogon key gets angry. And just won’t launch AdvMENU… I can’t understand why?

And (error 2) Those damn files were never created in that respective folder WTF?

I have got a problem shelling Hyperspin as well.
I have added the registry key as described in the first post and everything seems to work at first.

However, a few second after Hyperspin loaded the menu loses focus. I have to alt-tab then to bring the focus back. From that moment on everything works fine, but the windows desktop loads and I can alt-tab to it anytime.

What am I doing wrong? Why is the desktop and explorer.exe even loaded at all?

I've been reading this, and it inspired me to improve my frontend. I updated Big Blue so that when the program starts, it hides the Windows cursors for you, and when you exit Big Blue, it restores the cursors for you. This means no downloading of separate .cur files, no manual setting tweaking, and instantly getting your cursors back when you exit the frontend. Completely brain dead.

This doesn't hide the cursor when Windows loads, but I personally don't care about the start up. What always bothered me was seeing the loading cursor when you launch a game and MAME's loading.

Maybe I am asking the wrong question here, but if you are booting from a PC why do you not just delay the monitor from starting up or even easier add a switch near your CP.

Also you can boot your PC in Barts PE it really isn't that difficult.

Real arcade games that run on windows never seem to make any efforts to hide it, they just boot to windows and then load the game.

If you needed to do housekeeping or maintenance you flip a turn it on hit Ctrl Alt Delete and temporarily turn off shell. You wouldn't be scrambling to find the mouse. I did that with my XBMC. I had a logitech all in one keyboard, I just flipped off the switch on the keyboard. and I used a remote most of the time.Then flipped it on when I needed it. Just a thought.

Unplugging the mouse doesn't work. If you unplug your mouse, and you launch a big game in MAME from any frontend, you'll see the hourglass dead center in the screen while the program's starting up.

How do you guys handle shut downs?  If you hard power down the cabinet, the next time Windows boots it will ask to start normal or safe mode.  I am in the planning phase of building a cabinet so I would like to have these items ironed out at the onset of the build.

In power options - system settings - you set the computer to shut down on the power button press so that pressing the power button shuts down the system properly rather than hard shut down.

9. Copy the hacked resources back in to windows.

For this step you need to copy the updated files from the desktop back to their original locations.  It seems it is sometimes possible to do this inside Windows but I kept getting file protection errors so the easy way is to get a live linux cd and reboot your computer from this.  (I recommend Linux Mint if you are unfamiliar with Linux).  Go to the file explorer in linux and copy the new verison of the file to the original location.  Make a backup of the original file first and call it something that you'll remember (eg. imageres_BACK.dll).

Here's a quick tip for step 9 that may save some the trouble of setting up and booting to a Linux live CD.  Windows won't allow you to overwrite system files that are in use, however, it will allow you to rename them.  I was able to replace each of the 3 system files as follows.

• Open a command prompt as administrator
• ren C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll.old
• copy C:\Users\[username]\Desktop\ResourceMods\imageres.dll C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll
• repeat for other files

Your newly copied files will be loaded on the next reboot.

I've done this a couple times and I always have to look up all the steps somewhere.  7 is a ---smurfette---.  You can save a lot of time using instantsheller for the cursors and shelling, and no, you don't need Linux.  Just use DOS and copy/ren like byancey said.  I do this on Tiny7, which makes it a little more difficult, but the steps are similar.

I use one button for power up & down, both on arcade and HTPC.  Just keep the default of single press=shutdown feature and it, uh, behaves just like a regular PC (because it is).  Gotta give a nod to bender though, never thought of using the mouse-sonar.

What I do to get back into windows:  Most FEs have a "run on exit" command.  Point this to explorer.exe.  Whenever I do maintenance, I plug in a keyboard, Alt-F4 to close FE, and explorer starts.  If you want cursors back, make a shortcut for instantsheller and hit the bigass "Undo".  When you're done, hit the power button to shutdown and once more to fire it back up.  Done.

Ive followed this guide and on the whole it works fairly well apart from one tiny little problem, since deleting the bitmaps in the imageres file and editing the wininit.exe.mui to get rid of the shutdown text on my logoff/shutdown screen I get a spinning circle and the message "PLEASE WAIT", and I cannot find any reference to these in any of the files that reshacker can edit, have I done something wrong?

As a result of editing the winlogon.exe.mui file I have managed to remove the text from the welcome screen so I don't think its a case of me not knowing what I am doing, I assume that its possible to remove the text from the shutdown screen as the video in the guide seems to show.

Ive included a vid of my machine booting up and shutting down and if you squint real hard you can see the PLEASE WAIT and spinning circle on the shutdown screen, any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Just wanted to chime in here on this topic a bit. I'm coming out of arcade cabinet building retirement after about 12 years to work on a whole new project for my son. My very first arcade that I made was an old Player's Choice 10 cabinet that I converted into a MAME cabinet with a new customized control board and the then rarely heard of iPac... loved that machine. Ran it on Windows 98 with ArcadeOS.. ah the good ole' days.. Hiding windows was MUCH MUCH simpler then.. but anyways. After researching a bit on how I wanted to do it, I decided to buy a cocktail kit from recroommasters.com and have at it like that. Chose the ASUS A58M-E motherboard with an A-6 5400 CPU. Mainly because it was a great buy when you get it as a refurb off of newegg, and, having used that same board for a PC build I did for a kid at work, I know I can use the  MyLogo2 software on it to replace the BIOS boot screen. I also use the programs "TweaksLogon" and "Windows 7 boot updater" to change the startup animation and the login/shutting down screens. Glad I found this topic, the tips should help me with a few more tweaks like hiding the cursor, and etc.. thanks.. appreciate it... BUT ANYWAYS..

As for being able to work on the computer, seeing the cursor, etc.. I have THAT taken care of as well. I plan on keeping the access door side for the cocktail cabinet against the wall and locked up, but I will STILL be able to perform any maintenance/updating roms, etc without having to scoot the cabinet back and opening the door, or installing any external USB port, or any other nonsense like that.... My solution?? A nifty little program called "Ultra VNC" and a TP-LINK TL-WN722N.

When you are viewing the screen remotely, you don't need to worry about the cursor being visible, or about changing setting and rebooting or this or that. You simply send the kill commands to the FE, then send the commands to start the explorer.exe shell.

And, since you have file transfer capabilities as well, you can actually send/rename/delete/etc  files without using the explorer.exe shell. Of course, this will require that you have a wireless router... but then, who doesn't have one of those these days??

Another option is to use TeamViewer, which is my preferred software for all the other computers in my house and owned by friends, but for something like an arcade FE, I find Ultra VNC to be a bit more discrete and unobtrusive. Team Viewer, when you disconnect, will pop up a "thanks for using me blah blah blah" dialog, Ultra VNC doesn't do that.

Yep, I'm getting that same "SHUTTING DOWN" on shutdown as well.

Edit: Quick question as well. I have my PC booting up vertically instead of horizontal, is there a way to change the bootup animation screen to display the same way? I can probably flip the animation itself in a paint program, but the words still show up horizontal.

Thanks for the tutorial! I couldn't get any of it to work and had to resort to using InstantSheller but still, there's not many guides on how to even attempt this out there, definitely lead me in the right direction.

I'm still trying to get my boot animation set to the space invader one you posted. I run Win 7 Boot Updater 2 as admin, go through the process as described and it tell me all the files were updated as required, but there's still no sign of it on boot.

I'm using Win7 x64 SP1 and have tried editing both the C:\windows\bootmgr file, and the one on hidden partition, both with no success. Has anyone managed to figure this out?
