Jukebox software questions
« on: July 31, 2011, 12:57:29 pm »
Hi everyone,

I am brand new to jukes but after going through too many arcade machines, I have developed an urge to build my own mp3 jukebox. Since I'm a noob at this, I was hoping you kind folk could help with a few questions.

1. Whats the best software I should use if I would like to eventually want to boot right to a touchscreen juke?
2. As I have yet to purchase a touchscreen monitor (and wont be able to for a while) I will need software that will also work well as a non-touchscreen (if that even makes a difference).

Please let me know.

Thanks!

1. Whats the best software I should use if I would like to eventually want to boot right to a touchscreen juke?

You can download a program called "instant sheller". Then select which program you want it to load to and you see nothing when the PC startup and it loads straight to any jukebox software you select.

2. As I have yet to purchase a touchscreen monitor (and wont be able to for a while) I will need software that will also work well as a non-touchscreen (if that even makes a difference).

This shouldn't make any difference. They all work pretty much the same. Jukebox software is designed for touchscreens so buttons are big, but if your using a mouse then it doesn't really matter

I use E-Touch/Freebox for my touchscreen jukes.  It is commercial software though and costs $35.  For $70 you can become a lifetime supporter and have access to the most skins for it.  Some of them, especially the lifetime support ones are very nice.  You can install the demo and run it with full capabilities, its just time limited.  I think it runs for 15 minutes at a time and then shuts down I believe.

I am just about to start another jukebox. I have installed and tested about 30 programs.

E-touch is good and looks great when you get the background images. I have to admit I did have some runtime errors on 2 different installs.

Albumplayer is good BUT like most jukebox software for some unknown reason they make tiny little play/stop/forward etc buttons even though they know its mostly going to be used on touchscreens. Drives me mad how they come so close but then don't even think about it.

I think I will be going with Silverjuke or E-touch though. Silverjuke also has small buttons, but it just looks nice, easy etc.

At the end of the day its all opinion, so try plenty and you will find the one to suit.

There is a good list of jukebox software in the wiki page on here aswell!

If you wan't to go old school, you also have DW Jukebox as an option.
With an Ipac interface you can have "real" jukebox buttons for input etc.
It is also easy to shell, which gives a fast boot etc.

Have any of you used a software that dose not have a yearly fee? I have an ELO touchscreen and videos that I have converted from youtube as well as MP3s that I would like to use.

E-Touch has a one time $35 fee for the license.  Another $35 will get you lifetime supporter license which will give you a lot more themes/skins.  There is no monthly or yearly fee.  If your looking for home use then you can use any of the software people have suggested.  If you plan to run it commercially then you have a whole host of licensing issues to deal with.

I know everyone on here always seems to recommend etouch, but I am getting nothing but error after error with it. Version 6 and 7. Runtime errors, mismatch errors etc. Its an absolute pain if you have more than 5 albums! This was always the case. I have forgiven it the last few times I've used it but its absolutely every time.  Siverjuke works perfect, EVERY single time. Same with all other software. I don't know why it gives the most trouble. ???

When are you getting these errors?  What OS are you using?  I run it on a Tiny XP machine but I test it on my Win 7 64 machine.  I don't have problems on either and I have 1545 albums on my test machine.

Both. Same as you. Tiny XP and 7 32bit. I always get it sorted in the end, but there always seems to be some form of error. Its just frustrating because it is great looking software with large buttons for touchscreens unlike the rest.

Barry is pretty helpful and very active on his forums.  If you detail your problems on the E-Touch/Freebox forums he can probably get it straightened out for you.  I had problems with it a long time ago.  I don't remember what I was doing wrong but it was definitely my error, not the software.  Once I found out what I was doing wrong I haven't had a problem since.

Touchjams is great as far as I am concerned. www.touchjams.com

No crashes, no awkward settings, reads iTunes.

Only neg is it's a little picky with tags and drm stuff.

But it's the best I have used imo and I use it daily.

I am using Album Player in my Rat Rod.

http://www.albumplayer.com/

I really like it, and it many if not all of its skins are designed for touch screens.

I found etouch frustrating and unintuitive.  Or rather, it was too frustratingly unintuitive for me to want to spend the time to figure it out.  My opinion, I know many love it.

got to agree here , i think ive trialled em all , used quite a few now over a fairly long time and to date i havent found a perfect one yet , the skinning is a little complicated but im going to work on a manual for bob , bob is very helpful and listens to all the feedback ive given him , he seems very committed to making it an even better juke
it isnt free but the download is a full working version for about 15 days i think , its 50 bucks lifetime of updates and no yearly fee , im in the middle of skinning and im looking for some more options , it also has a pretty good remote control feature where you can control your juke using any device that has internet access , ive given it a good workout over the last few weeks and hasnt crashed once , i tag all my albums pretty well and it has a few issues on compilation albums but im sure bob will have this fixed at some point , the search feature is awesome and one of the best ive come across , it has 5 or six skins available at the moment but im sure if someone has a skin bob would put it up if they wanted to share it , ill put mine up when he makes the updates that will make my skin a little more unique.it has karake button if you like that , it has video support , it has internet radio support , plays all files i think including flac , im pretty impressed and im a hard critic , it has a few things id like to see on it and ive been talking to bob about these and hopefully we will see some of these in the next update.

do yourself a favor and try this one for free , if you want any advice on skinning ill be happy to answer anything ive come across

You can also try using mine, the SKG Jukebox. It's free, and I developed it specifically to be touch friendly. It isn't as slick as touchjams, and it isn't skinnable yet,  but it does have certain convenient features like album art downloading and CD ripping built in. Get more info at my website at www.skgsoft.net0.

Ego, my boy, I am a little disappointed you didn't give me at least a partial shout out where this question is concerned. Later.

My post from the recommendation thread (note SK's isn't the same one as skepticalgeek's) -

I have recently changed my jukebox program from SK's to Jukebox Arcade found here - http://www.extrastrength.com/jbarcade.php

The reason for the change was that the former didn't work well with my touchscreen. I didn't mind paying for the program that I wanted, but even so, I could only find two that I was interested in - Jukebox Arcade and E-Touch. E-Touch however has too many features that I did not want to use (from what I remember, these were all internet features), and as I couldn't find a way to remove these, I decided I would not like looking at all the unused features available on the screen. So I didn't purchase a copy of it and went for the other option. I may of picked Jukebox Arcade regardless in the end though.

I made it perfect by downloading a skin provided here http://forums.hackaday.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=61&start=10. This skin removed a couple of unwanted buttons ("setting" and "about"), plus a few logos, as well as increasing the size of each CD image by a very attractive amount.

I think Jukebox Arcade is brilliant, it is even free!

It's cool  ;)

The post is on the first page and it was posted on January 28th, 2011 at 8:46 am.

If you need any help with the programme then give me a shout though it's pretty straight forward. The bad thing was tagging my tunes correctly, damn, now THAT took a long time but, you know, it was SO worth it! 8)

I also vote for Arcade Jukebox with the skin in question..  How do I know?  Because it is exactly the software I am using.  What is weird is that I had to have found a thread stating all of this well before the 1st october as I have been tagging and testing since the beginning of September.

Although the heading of "My post from the recommendation thread (note SK's isn't the same one as skepticalgeek's) -"
Should be why I recognised it  :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Use MP3Tag or Mediamonkey for the tagging.  Decide on a format at the beginning for naming conventions.

IE CD-Track-Album-Artist-Title.mp3 and stick to this and you can't really go wrong.

sorry buddy , i did like yoru juke  very much and spent a lot of time on it and a lot of my ideas you implemented which was appreciated , my problem was i had some crashes , i hadnt heard from you for a while and thought you might of been having problems , it was imo a very good juke , but the not playing of a lot of my songs was doing my head in i just couldnt figure out why , also the search feature wasnt working as the tagging was not lining up with mine and i really did not want to re tag my music album again.
i still have it mate and appreciate all the work you have done  ,  for a free jukebox it was one of the best ive come across and i apologise to skg for not mentioning it , i disagree with him it is slick looking and has some great features , as i said for free it is definitely worth a look
have the problems with songs not playing been addressed yet?
i really wanted a juke that had remote feature as well , i cant remember if you added that or not
with the work we have done together ill make mention of it any time i mention touchjams , ill make a commerciall recommendation and a free recommendation

regards

ego
