Interesting cab shapes (Burgertime, etc) - any suggestions?
« on: July 12, 2011, 04:59:45 am »
I'm looking to make a new (vertical-orientation) cab, but don't want to make a 'generic shaped' cab. At the moment I'm looking at Burgertime as I love the shape of the cab.

Can anyone point out any other 'different' cabs?

Theres always the sleek lines of Tempest.
I also like the shape of the Data East cab used for Bad Dudes, with its curved marquee. Not a completely radical design but it's a little different.

Mappy had that HUGE marquee:

Do that and put a TV in it. The TV could display the current game playing, marquee and some video of the current game for everyone to watch

Burger Time is the same shape as Ms Pacman, but with a couple parts bumped out for his hat.
You could do the same thing and start with a standard cab, then make some extra parts stick out to accomodate whatever side art you choose.
Food Fight is another one that works that way:

would you consider MS Pac Man generic?  What about Super Pacman, which is just a pac cab with a slice cut out?
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

While not particularly odd-shaped as a whole, I've always thought the curved marquee found on many Data East cabinets was an interesting detail:

The Mappy style cab would be a good candidate for a "showcase" monitor in place of the giant marquee. Stick an LCD in there and everyone in the room can see whats goin' on.

Especially the girls. You know how hot and bothered they get when they see that Donkey Kong kill screen coming up.

 :laugh2:

I've been looking at the Kangaroo cab, the sideart will cut down nicely for a cabaret/mini - it's a cab for my wife and she's Australian. I know the cab shape isn't out of the ordinary, but I think I'll have a play with the artwork and see what happens.

I recall someone had made a cool byoac batman arcade cabinet with the car fins/bat wings on the top sides.

Funny that I can't find it searching.

Found it.

Yeah, thats the trick. It's all about the artwork. Just look at the lines on Tempest. Without the artwork, it's nothing. Also check out the Journey cabinet

I recently picked up a Gyruss, my favourite game. You're right, it is in-your-face!

I've always wanted to figure out a way to get a marquee shaped LCD (maybe from a slot machine?) and put it in the Marqee spot. Then have the front end or CP wizard show the marquee of game you're playing as you play it. Maybe slide show through some of the artwork as well. And then, as mentioned, the game play so the ladies would having something to see.

I always thought Narc had an interesting layout. In fact I remember a version with a second monitor above it. I don't know if Williams made it or if the bowling alley where I saw it modded their machine. There was definitely a two tier Narc in my neighborhood growing up. Never any ladies watching though..... hmmm?

I agree with everyone else though, side art can be just as big a wow factor.

Thanks everyone for the ideas, good to see some of these more unusual designs again.

I've settled for my original plan of Burgertime - the build starts here:

I guess Im a little late on this, but thought Id throw in my suggestion anyway.
I saw "Computer Space" on the movie "Soylent Green".
But this cabinet would probably have to be made with someone who has the talents of OND.

Funny, I thought about making a fiberglass copy ages ago, but it seemed a bit daunting!

Die Hard Arcade has a nice shape. This game is so cool, some great memories with this game.
