Help with game list display in Mala please
« on: June 27, 2011, 03:45:06 pm »
I've tried searching for this but to no avail. I'm currently working on a Star Wars project which plays only three games in the series, namely Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. I'm using Mala as the frontend to simply display the three titles available and above the list will appear an image of the slected game marquee.

The problem I have is that the whole games list moves up down with the slected game being in a fixed position..... rather than the game list staying fixed with the selected game moving up/down. Is there a way to change this? Or is it just the way Mala is programmed? If I have to live with it I can, it's just that when the top game is selected there's a large gap between the list and the marquee image, but when the bottom game is selected the gap reduces to nothing. Just looks a bit odd.

I was not able to find a way to do this (my original plan was to just have Pac, Ms. Pac, Jr. Pac on my cab). What I ended up doing in the end was to create a front end that just displayed one name at a time, and hitting the joystick just flipped to the next game name. It just took "hiding" the non-selected game names with a black font on a black background image. Not as slick as a moving cursor, but it got me away from the "scrolling list" aesthetic. Love to hear if anyone else has a good solution.

Love the idea of cabs that focus on a limited series of games!
Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. Super Mario Bros (arcade hardware- light restore) Tetris Cocktail (SNES), Arcade Classics upright (60-in-1, then MAME), Multi-Raiden (arcade hardware). Pac Man vs.(Gamecube),

Working on: Pinball Re-theme, Homebrew arcade arena shooter

I haven't tested since I am at work, but you might be able to work around by having 3 game lists in Mala, each list having only one game, with it's own layout. Then you can add the names of the unselected games right on your layout background images. So when you switch to a different list/layout, it gives the illusion that you only changed your selection.

Hope that makes sense. I have used this method to switch between different emulators, but not specific games. It worked fine for me. I think it should work just the with individual game lists.

Can you not just use a fullscreen image for each of the games? Use them as a screenshot and just hide the game list. Here's some I made for MALA, before I tried the Urban Interactive launcher.
