Beep when buttons are being pressed? (only in Advmame)
« on: September 01, 2003, 09:41:11 am »
I'm getting a beep when too many buttons are being pressed. I guess it is like a keyboard beep in windows, but I can't figure out how to turn this off.

I'm running win98se and using an iPac/4.

thanks for any help.

check to make sure one of the buttons isn't CTRL, maybe that is your problem.

Or, open up the PC and disconnect the internal speaker. That *should* work depending on what computer you have / how you have everything hooked up.

I remapped all of the ctrl, shift, alt, etc. keys on my ipac4 to be "normal" keys.  I kept getting key combos like alt-enter, alt-space, all those windows keys.

also check for shorted out buttons - I'm wondering if one might be "stuck down" in hardware, causing Windows to always have something in a keyboard buffer, and through some funny interaction between that and Mame generate beeps.

go into control panel -> accessibility options and uncheck all that crap ... that should take care of the beeping problem  :)

I checked for shorts.

I turned off everything through the accesability options.

I don't have a system speaker, and I don't have an option in the bios (ASUS) to turn off warning beeps.

I'm still getting the beeps. It seems like its either when you hit the buttons to fast, or you hit buttons that aren't being used in the game.

Does anybody else have any ideas?

I'm using advmame, if that matters.

Do you think the problem is in mame or in windows?

I would suggest you reboot... and just open a notepad and nothing else....

then press those buttons... (or whatever combo press) to try setting off the beep....

if you cannot set off the beep... then its mame....

if you can set off the beep....
then it could be hardware... or windows....

I've done some further debugging. This only seems to happen when a game is loaded in Advmame. It DOES NOT happen with regular mame nor with any other windows application.

heres what happens, I load SF2 and when you hit the buttons (usually 3-6) I get computer beeps. This happens in other games, but its most anoying in SF2. It happened in .71 and .72 advmame.

Nobody else has ever experienced this?

I believe there is (I thought it was fixed, but maybe not) a bug in advanceMAME where it does not poll the PS/2 port often enough and the buffer fills up.  Might try older versions of AdvanceMame or using the I-PAC/4 in USB mode.  USB does not have this problem.

Thanks for the info, thats the best reason/solution I've heard. I'm going to give it a try. Only problem is my iPac/4 is PS/2 and I need the cable from Andy. That means $12.00 shipping for a $7.00 cable :(

I'll let you know if this fixes my problem.

Thanks!

I'm not sure a standard PS/2 to USB conversion cable wouldn't work.  I might try to find one locally that I could return before spending $20 for a cable.
