Weird Ipac Issue
« on: May 17, 2011, 01:09:58 am »
Hey all,
This is a small but nagging problem.
I can open up notepad and hit any button I want and it responds accordingly, slow or fast.  Except for player 1 start (1).  Every time I hit it quickly it seems to only fire every second shot.  I replaced the cherry switch and still the same thing.  Any ideas?
I'll trouble shoot more tonight.

Just switched the Ipac's Player 1 Start connection with 4 other wires and those buttons adopted the slow behavior so it looks like it's the Ipac  itself.

Player 1 Start acts as a "shift" key on the I-Pac. If you press and hold P1 Start and then press P1 Button #1 it will add a credit to games in mame. Pressing P1 Start and  then pressing P2 Start acts as "Escape".
The behaviour you are seeing is perfectly normal for the P1 Start button. The delay is there to see if you are going to press another button in conjunction with the P1 Start.   There is no practical reason to "mash" that particular button in quick succession as you are trying to do, which is why it was chosen to act as a default "shift" key.

In fact I believe the P1 Start button only activates on release. You can test this by pressing and holding the button down for a few seconds and then releasing it. I might be wrong on this bit though, but it's easily tested.

Yup, sounds like the IPAC's default "shift" behavior.  You can disable it in the config utility if it bothers you and/or you don't want to use it.

Yup that was it!  I changed the shift to an empty admin button and now I have all my "F" buttons whenever I need them.  Thanks guys.
