MAME shifter to mouse hack (questions).
« on: April 14, 2011, 05:59:52 pm »
I need someone to tell me what wires go to what from the original arcade shifter in my Monaco GP arcade to a PS2 mouse PCB.  I've read up on the shifter glitch and using mamewah blah blah, I just need to know where the 3 wires connect to from the switch on the shifter pls.  If I have read correctly, 2 of the wires go to where the switch is connected to the PCB, and I'm guessing the 3rd is the ground but I need to know where it goes.

Thanks!

OK I have found on the shifter switch where the NC, NO, and COM details are.  I also see on the switches on the mouse PCB that they too have the NC, NO, and C abbreviations on them.

Is it safe to conclude that you run wires from the locations on the original arcade shifter to the corresponding holes on the mouse PCB, after removing the original mouse PCB switch?

As soon as I get the ye or ne I will be melting me some solder so please respond!  Thanks!

Well I was dying to make some progress on this tonight, so I just went ahead since I hadn't seen any replies yet.  For anyone who is reading this thread out of sheer curiosity (and hope to do something similar one day), here's my update:

1. for info for anyone who's looking to do a similar project with their Monaco GP, the wiring for the shifter is as follows: yellow wire is NC, green wire is NO, and white wire is Com; the switch found under the arcade shifter is a MICRO roller switch.  Under the roller is the switch piece that pushes in on contact.

2. I have not yet removed the switch button off of the mouse PCB because I wanted to be able to use it as a backup check in Windows (to make sure there wasn't something wrong with that PCB or its connectivity to the PC); what I did was hook up the wires from the arcade shifter to the pins on the BACK of the mouse pcb using those alligator-clip wires.  The set I have comes in a variety of colors, so I was able to use the yellow, green, and white alligator-clips to match the wiring presently found attached to the arcade shifter

3. Windows recognizes both the original mouse switch, as well as the shifter (YAY), in the regular OS mode.  However, MAME is not seeing either the mouse button switch OR the shifter action (BOO).  I looked in the setup section, and tried switching the function from the spacebar (currently the default for MAME PP1) to either the switch button OR the arcade shifter (this is at the P1 button 3 setting), and it's not recognizing the response from either one.  If I go back into Windows, the OS is seeing the mouse, it's recognizing that it's a PS/2 mouse, and it's saying it's working correctly according to the control panel.  I also went into the "input (THIS GAME)" section, where one of the first settings is "gear up down" and it's showing as SPACEbar also, and trying to change that using either the arcade shifter, or its mated mouse button switch, is not being recognized.

Any help at this point would be greatly appreciated.  The mouse is a PS/2 Microsoft Intellimouse.

We're not there yet with the shifter, but it's the first real "progress" I've had with the Monaco GP in any way shape or form so, I'm happy!

I'll have to see if this is having anything to do with my issue:

I didn't read your entire post as I'm about to run, but make sure you have the mouse turned on in MAME.  By default, mouse is not enabled.  In any command line version of mame, just use the -mouse switch (or add it to your config file).

Thanks, I'm hoping that's all that it is- I'm sure it's pretty small potatoes to read that I was all psyched that the shifter was actually being recognized in Windows when I was moving it, but for me that was such a great piece of motivation!

Does it matter where I drop the "-mouse" entry in the config file?  This little trick is new to me.

What I'm not getting about the mouse not being enabled is, I have an ancient copy of MAME on another PC, and if you play Star Wars, it recognizes the mouse when maneuvering the X Wing.  So I'm confused on how the install on my other PC can see the mouse and allow a person to use it if the mouse isn't enabled by default?  It looks like I have alot to learn about MAME!

It's not really a trick, any good program (and a whole lotta crappy ones) have command line options. It's standard method of modifying program behavior especially for operating systems that lack a Windows component.

You probably configured it back when but just forgot about it.

MAME comes with a README file that should explain how to configure MAME to suit your needs. It would be a good idea to glance over it. It'll help you tweak MAME to your satisfaction.

"-mouse" would be part of the command line you enter to launch the game, not part of the config file.

The config file will contain a line something like "mouse=0" and you'd change it to "mouse=1"
If you do that, it will be enabled for all games and you don't have to bother with the command line.

Either way will work.

You actually just made me remember that the first copy of MAME that I got was given to me by someone else, so perhaps they made the mod on their copy on their box before passing it to me (via CD).  That must have been how I acquired it that way.

I have to tell you guys that being a person who came into this hobby by working on old school arcade machines, that this new topic of learning has been very interesting to me.  I'm hoping that I can keep rolling with it and have this game up and running while enjoying both the legacy arcade parts with the newer PC back-end.  It's just some really cool stuff!
