I was re-reading RandyT's post from ages ago and was wondering.... http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=70840.0

Now that LCDs and Plasmas are a lot cheaper, has anyone looked into what it would cost to have them cut down? Is the cutting service still too expensive to be able to make a profit on the resell of them? I would be willing to spend up to $400 on a LCD marquee replacement that wouldn't need to stick out the top or bottom, and fit side to side. I know they cut LCDs all the time for aircraft controls, you would think the price would come down after they had the infrastructure in place to do it once. In it's most simplistic form isn't it just; Pressurize cutting box, cut along lower edge, reseal with epoxy, then disconnect driver circuits no longer needed?

That is crazy expensive, I can buy a 32" for less than $250 http://www.amazon.com/Coby-TFTV3225-720p-Widescreen-HDTV/dp/B003VRWKU2/ref=sr_1_5?s=tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1302087072&sr=1-5. I can't see why it should be $700-$2700 extra to just to cut a panel, once the infrastructure is in place to do one. Although I bet LG just did a custom production run on their screens and didn't have to cut them.

I could see paying $400, but not $2000. I guess I won't be having a LCD panel for my marquee anytime soon.

That looks freaking amazing. BUT, that's also more than I have in my whole cabinet. If I were in the $3000 price range for my build budget, I'd be very interested though.

I was thinking about doing a lcd as a marquee too, but it seems too expensive for me. I'm on a strict budget, maybe later I'll try this.

Too bad that's not mine... That's BadBoyBill's, the creator of HyperSpin, and I think he paid about $700 for it.

I personally can't afford that, so I am just going to use a normal sized LCD in the way that Randy did on his cab. My cab uses a 24" LCD, so I'm going to get another 24" LCD for my marquee. The top part of my image is going to have my cabinet marquee logo/design and the lower part will show the game being played.

We have a project under way for marquee images, right now we have over 400 re-drawn marquees. This includes many extremely rare marquees where just finding a single image of the game online is impossible.

Those monitors are even more sick than I thought.

I just wish we could get a $300-$400 half-height LCD for our needs. Maybe one day. I really thought the custom cutting cost would have come down by now. Oh well.

In a similar vein, I looked into custom size LCDs. Why cut them, when you can just make them that way? Further, if you're making your own cabinet, why be stuck with the standard marquee size? There are lots of things you can do with the rest of the screen - for example, high score tables per game.

Sorry to open an old thread. But just scored one the LG monitors on ebay for $650. Man I thought I scratched this itch 4 years ago. Now I am back making changes to my cab. And with this purchase I will most likely have to do another build as my current cab will not fit the Marquee LCD as it is a little too wide and a little too tall. (the LCD not the CAB)

But I just got into getting hyper spin to work and am going to buy some of the aimtrak guns neither of which were available when I started my project years ago. I am also redoing the CP to a 4 player. (but getting north coast customs for that as I just don't have the time).

Anyway back to my reason for posting.

@Dazz any tricks to getting this thing hooked up to Hyperspin?

Some other options, using mirrors and standard & decased/laptop LCDs.

A) Top Mount
B) Internal De-Cased / Thin LCD
C) Large LCD, software split. Physical boarder divider.

Nope. Just something I whipped up in my head for people like myself, who cant justify that kind of money on a marquee.

Im pretty sure they would work ok.. but certainly not as nice as what you picked up. Id love a dedicated marquee.. and Im sure a lot of others would too... but not at +600. Maybe 2 to 300 max.

The thing is, if theres enough pre-order capability, it might actually pull down the costs drastically. The tooling is probably still available.. its just the machine time and assembly that will costs. 1000 pre-orders @ $300 = $300,000.. which is good money if the factory has a slow period and wants to crank out some extra work.

Plus, your cutting out a few middle-men, which helps preserve their higher profit margins.

That would be awesome to use as a DMD for a VP cab. Specs put it at 30.1" in the case. That would be super tight in a Williams DMD head. IIRC it's 30" outer measurement for the head but I could be wrong. Maybe if this were decased or the inside of the head chiseled out a little. Or maybe just build a new head.

Well I bought another one from amazon and with shipping ($104) it was $238. I guess there is no free/cheap shipping to Hawaii!

Took some measurements of the inner opening on some pin heads.

Whodunnit: 27"
F-14 Tomcat: 27"
Fathom: 29.5"

The manual for this monitor says it is 31.5" with the case.

You could try for a widebody pin but that really narrows down the donor list. To realistically use this as a DMD in a VP cab you'd have to make your own cab head.

got one of mines today. It was packed allright. There is a couple of small scratches/scuffs on the metal housing, but not a big deal as I'm thinking about decasing it for my project anyways. We'll see. Couple things to note it is quite wide over 30" in the case maybe just under 29 decased (don't know for sure yet). So it is much wider than a standard arcade machine. Another thing... It is heavy! this is definately commercial grade hardware. The manual says 28 pounds but it feels more like 50. nice looking screen though... We'll see what it looks like when I fire it up.

I just got mine in. There are some pretty nasty scratches on the top and back of the case, but the screen looks good. The manual mentions a remote, but mine didn't come with one.

I plan on mounting this above my 47" TV, so off to buy a new mount. The mounting holes are 400 x 200 if anyone is interested.
