PS2 issues -- need help
« on: March 07, 2011, 07:04:33 am »
I got a used PS2 fat from Gamestop recently and noticed a few
quirks with it:

When I try to boot up a disc, I used to be able to insert a disc
and press the reset button and it would boot automatically (my
old system).  With this one, it always goes into the browser/system
config menu, and I have to navigate the browser to load up the game.

And then, last night I bought a few new games:  Rockband AC/DC,
Guilty Gear X, and Smackdown vs Raw 2007.  GGX and Smackdown
both loaded ok, but then they both hang when they're loading up
the actual fight.  I can create characters in SvR but that's about
it.   Rockband ACDC works great -- no issues there, and there don't
seem to be issues with my other games.  Could this be the discs
or the system?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Mine does that to. Used to be able to load the disc right up.

I have no idea what causes it and I've never actually researched it. I've found that information about the PS2 is immensely inconsistent. Apparently different PS2 models have different software features but these aren't very well documented so a lot of information that outlines a specific feature (memory card reformating, DVD Playback, IR sensor, etc) simply fail to mention what model it's intended for. If you find the cause and solution, let me know.

It would still be a good idea to check the discs and make sure they're not scratched to oblivion.

Are the discs that are having troubles the blue ones?

I've got a launch day PS2 and it eventually stopped reading the blue discs.  Other discs/games would read fine, but the old blue ones stopped reading.

Asked around at EB and Play-N-Trade here locally and it was apparently a known issue; if the DVD drive on it starts to go, one of the first signs is that it doesn't read the blue discs any more.

Same Here.  Really sucks because Frequency and Tribes are Blue Discs.

Guilty Gear X is blue; Smackdown vs Raw '07 is silver, and
unfortunately they both have problems.

I know I have some other blue discs, but can't say if they
have problems or not  as I don't think I've tried them on
this ps2 yet.

I'm going to try to clean the lens tonight and see if that helps.

Cleaning the lens did nothing... same behavior at before  :(

I'm past the date where I can return the PS2, but I can return
the discs still... maybe I'll see if I have better luck with SD vs Raw 2006.

+1

Mine refuses to automatically load most of my library. About 95% of my PS2 library are all single owner (me) so scratched discs aren't the problem.

So I decided to do a search and to my surprise, there's a discussion about it on this forum from 2005. Even more interesting is the discussion links to Tweak 3D where a solution presents itself. I believe mine is a 30001 model, we'll have to see.

Interesting fix.  Haven't tried it yet but I am getting some acceptable results now
for some unknown reason.

Mostly I didn't mind navigating from the browser except when I was using my
guitar controller because the strum bar on the controller doesn't exactly work
like a joystick in the menus.

Lately as I've been trying it though, it still goes to the browser/sys config screen,
but then if I press the green button on my guitar controller and move the strum bar
up it loads.  Not exactly "automatic" but better than having to swap out control pads
and guitars all the time.

Stick them onto a HDD.
