PS2/Blue Disc Problem

Has anyone ever had a problem where a PS2 gives a disc read error when trying to read "blue discs?"  Any help would be great!

Blue discs are CD based PS2 games as opposed to DVD based games (silver backed).  The most probable cause of your problem is a problem with your PS2's laser.  Either the laser is going bad/breaking, or the alignment is off.  There are tutorials online on how to adjust the laser, although I've never done it personally.  Alternatively, I've seen laser assemblies sell for $30-50 or so and you could just swap it out.

It's possible that something else could be your problem, but this is the most likely cause.

I bought a used PS2 that would not play blue discs. I read somewhere that sometimes the unit doesnt get a good grip on the disc and thats why it wont read blue discs.  I applied a piece of tape about an inch along on the disc near the center hole. It worked for me. Now I can play Time Crisis 2.

My ps2 is not even a year old and it sounds awful when reading blue discs.  Is this a sign that it is going to break soon?

I thought only the older ps2's( first year ps2's) had problems reading blue disks, i never had a problem.

If you go on the PSP forums there is a help topic just for this. Some of the older PS2's do not play the blue disks at all. If its a early version sony will replace it as part of a recall. If it's newer than do as above... ajust or clean the lens. Personally i would clean the lens then trade it in at your local game store for the new slimline. The one i got reads anything and everything.

It's normal to hear the disc spin up and down when using (blue) CD-ROM media on the PS2. It's because they spin at 24x while (silver) DVD-ROM media spins much slower so are hardly audible. You don't hear any noise when playing a music CD either as they spin a 1x

Thats total BS..

 

Almost all first run games were blue back CDs..  hense all launch titles worked on launch systems..

hell my first ps2 was a launch system, never had a single problem..
