J-Pac and JAMMA Switchers. Can it be done?
« on: January 25, 2011, 01:39:43 pm »
Is it possible to use the J-Pac with a JAMMA switcher? I don't know if anybody would want to do this. But I thought it would be cool to be able to switch from playing MAME to playing on original boards in the same cab. I don't know what effect it would have on the computer (that would still be on) while playing a JAMMA board. If button presses would still register on the computer/in MAME? Did a little searching and couldn't find anything on this. What do you think?

You can switch your jpac with a jamma switcher but if you have wired any of the additional buttons directly to the jpac they will not switch.

I would think that it should work, at least for the controls going through the jamma connector and jpac.
but what about the video?  On a jpac does'nt the video go like a regular vga cable from the pc to the jpac and then like regular jamma to the monitor.
Also I believe there are some other extra input through the jpac (but I may be wrong)

So this would be best to use with 2 player 3 button JAMMA games?

Yes, which wouldn't be a problem if the cab has and arcade monitor hooked up via JAMMA.

I have done it with Clay's MultiJAMMA kit and it worked fine.

The only issues have to do with things that fall outside of the JAMMA standard -- extra controls (extra buttons, sticks, trackball, etc.) and amplified audio come to mind.

Did the amplified audio work when the Jpac was active?

To be clearer -- JAMMA standard is for the audio signal to be amplified. What comes out of your PC typically isn't (unless you have an old audio card that supported it). So, you need to amplify the audio from your PC if you want to run it through the cabinet speaker (you can, of course, just stuff a pair of amplified speakers in there and avoid the whole issue, but then you still have the JAMMA boards to worry about).

There is no amplifier on the JPac, so you need to install one. I do this inline between the PC and the JPac.
