I disagree, I thought the trailer was really well done.   Short but very sweet.   I'm pumped about this!  Definitely going to listen in that day.   There should be some sort of contest I could enter to win a trip to be there to watch.  :)
+1 on the GO WIEBE!

Didn't Steve Wiebe recently break the high score for Donkey Kong?  I think on the website it rated his new score as the highest possible or 100%.  Either way, I still loathe Billy Mitchell

Thanks for the compliment on the video.  We are really pumped about this as well.  I can't wait to see Billy and Steve go at it but Hank might surprise everyone.  There are 7 other guys too that all have a chance at being the top scorer that weekend as well.  I would love it to be an annual thing but not sure if it has enough interest for that but who knows.  I mean hell if the TV show Jersey Shore can make it why can't this right?
Thanks again for the compliment.  We are doing this all to keep our hobby for dying out.

I'm rooting for Mitchel! The guy has confidence, personality, and isn't some sensitive emo whiner.

The whole underdog story is so cliché.

Billy Mitchell reminds me of Larry Bird. Back when they started the NBA 3-Point contest, they got together a bunch of the best shooters. Right before the contest, everyone was getting ready. Bird walked in, looked at everyone in the room, and asked the group which one of them was playing for second place. He knew he was going to win it, and he was cocky about it, but he backed up that statement by winning the contest three years in a row.

I think of this story whenever I see Billy Mitchell.

I have only seen King Of Kong and some web stuff on Mitchel. He does seem a bit assinine, but he seems to back it up... with VIDEO.. why is it so hard for him to actually do it (play games?) with people? I may have missed alot since KOK, maybe he is showing up for events now.

I am suprised at all the man love for Billy, In KoK he came off like a jackass, now if he is one in real life or not, I dont know, many people said the editing in that movie was kinda played up to make him the bad guy.

All i know is if he is really as he is made out to be, he is an ass, plain and simple, if not.. sorry for saying it, as judging sombody buy some interviews and such is a poor way to make a judgement.

If we where talking about rescuing people or cureing cancer, the "play to win" motto is correct. but its a friggin video game.. being an ass about that is ... well ...

Just an opinion

I've never met the man.  He is an ass in every interview I've ever seen, but I think it's all in the name of self promotion.
If he didn't tell you how great he was, how would you know?  He's a businessman first.  Being boring is not good business.

I respect your opinion, and my rebuttal would be, if you're rescuing people or curing cancer and you're taking it as playing a game, then I would be scared to put my life in your hands. So...no, that motto is not appropriate for those professions. Yes, it's a friggin game. Games are meant to be played, meant to be won. Games without winning are not called games...they're called Ultimate Frisbee :D :lol

The guy has confidence, ambition and has been successful in life. But yet people hate him because of the things he says in the public eye. Man, it give wonder of all the ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- I've said...people must hate me. :D

i think its all a game, with far more Boss fights we cant win without another life (to bad we are all working with a single quarter). My guess is, as so many say its all about self promotion, time and history shows nice guys finish last (and I would love quote from the movie "THE ROCK", even if I dont follow that way of thinking, it was an awsome quote) in most everything (but not always thankfully). Im glad im just so-so.. hehehe

and yes very poor comparision by me.. games and human life..  Maybe i should of said when it matters, do your utmost, when your playing a game, have fun... But I guess for some, the fun is beating the other player, never was for me. just different mindsets, nobody is wrong or right in that.

Definitely throwing my support for Billy Mitchell. While it is cool that Steve and Hank got into Kong recently, Billy is old school.  Billy reminds me of the guys (specifically his 80s footage) of the good players I would see in arcades...geeks in all other aspects but in the arcade they were Kings and could back their arrogance.

Being an old school arcade gamer myself I gotta go with the guy who enjoyed the game back when it was first out and popular.  Plus his smug act is just awesome.

Billy Mitchell winning this contest would completely benefit my career but Hank Chien is a local guy and really a tremendous story so I am sort of torn.  But yet again what do I know.  I just want it to go back and forth for 48 hours straight Between Billy, Steve, Hank and an Unknown.

FYI I have spent Many Many hours with Billy Mitchell and his confidence comes across arrogant to most but the guy has a heart of gold.  He just loves competition.  If he was a QB of your Football team you would love him but all the other fans would hate him.  I think it is just how competition goes.  I am randomly babbling now hahahha.

Thanks everyone for all the posts.  I am stoked i have sparked an interest.

Not babbling at all. That is completely how I picture him to be and why I referred to to his smugness as "smug act".  And the QB analogy is perfect and again goes along with how i picture him.

Can we think of a new catch phrase? I'd love to call Billy the "Don of Dong".

Thanks for the link

I appreciate it.

I just posted a photo from a video frame grab I took.

http://thekongoff.com/photos/eventphotos/

It is of Steve Sanders, Billy Mitchell, Hank Chien and Richie Knucklez of www.richieknucklez.com

If you could pass along this link via facebook or anything it would be greatly appreciated and yes I am begging

I throw in with Billy as well.  He's been an important part of these games for a while, and in truth, Wiebe owes a lot to Billy.  Without him, the score and the film wouldn't have been much.  The story was only interesting in the fact that that Mitchell set such a high standard once upon an time, and the filmmakers went a bit too far to vilify him.  I'm not true old school player, but Billy's attitude and quotes (as corny as they may be) definitely sum up what competitive gameplay is all about.

Hank Chien is pretty damned awesome himself coming out of nowhere and schooling guys who've been into the game for 20 or 30 years.

But yeah, I love the concept, everyone having ample time to prepare and us getting to see who does better on the day.

You are 100% correct.   Billy Mitchell has opened doors for all competitive gaming.  It doesn't matter if you like him or hate him but you have to respect what he has done for video games.  I can go on and on but I will spare ya all.

But I did start going through my video footage from thetronoff.com event and found a bunch of great video still in HD

If you guys can here is a link with a facebook share button on it.   I could use all the publisity i can get.  Yes I am in beg mode hahahha

I'll post more if you guys want.

Um.... it hasn't happened yet .   :D

I could care less anyways. Heard enough about the Kong Off that all I imagine is some huge gorilla back off in a corner somewhere, well... you know.

Not sick of the updates over here, I wish I lived in the area! Well, here's to plenty of kill screens and maybe a world record this weekend.

So I'm curious, it looks like you had 10 shiny new DKs for the event? Are they Repro's or refurbished? How did you go about quality checking each machine?

They are all refurbished.  Richie Knucklez even had all the cabinets repainted by Maacco.

also original Donkey Kong Back Doors

I filmed this from my Motorolla Droid btw.  I didn't have my HD Panasonic hmc 150 with me.  So the quality is only SD.

Who is selling illegal 60 in 1 multicades?

Are you implying Billy Mitchell or Richie Knucklez because I can assure you they are not.

Or are you just busting my balls?

Either way it is all good just want to keep the record straight and we don't need any false rumors.

I actually looked into the possibility of attending the event. But it was just too expensive to fly from the UK plus car rental, hotel, etc.etc. Flight alone to Allentown was about £430. Shame as I would love to be there.

Love the KongOff marquees you had specially made for the machines. Are the cabs individually numbered too? I saw one bezel with "12 of 12" in the corner. And are all the machines running the same boards? As in the same version rom chips? I would be interested in one of those cabs when you are done but I fear shipping to UK would be just too prohibitive. You guys are so lucky to be able to source cabs like this. Make sure to get the bezel or marquee signed by the main guys.  ;)

I watched the live feeds till about 3:15 am last night. They even had live feeds direct on some of the machines including Steve Wiebe's so you could watch him playing. I believe Hank Chien leads the way so far but it wasn't a kill screen. One guy did get a kill screen but was a lower score. Steve hasn't had a good game so far (by his standards).

Did Hank Chien beat the record again last week? 1.09 million?

So Hank Chien was crowned KoK at the event last night. Steve put up a good fight and posted the top score on the Sunday... but only for about 15 mins or so because Hank went top again with the game he was finishing byt about 5000 points. Nobody cracked a million but there about 5 different kill screens over the weekend. Billy came in 7th I think but he was very busy with other stuff around the event. I watched a lot of it on the live feeds and it looked to be well organised. Hank won a $1000 for coming out on top and they also got a nice clock (didn't see it closely) for Steve coming runner up. I think all the players were gonna sign it and then send it off to Steve as he had to leave earlier in the day to catch a plane home.

I believe they are gonna sell off most of the DK cabinets so there probably won't be another Kong Off again. But I did hear them over the live feed say that there will be a PacOff as the next event.

I'm betting he was the real winner - making mo-ney.

Too bad Saglio didn't take it. And nobody cracked a million. Dear Jesus.

In relating the whole DK phenomenon to someone outside the hobby last night ,I was wondering why Pac-Man, it being the top arcade game of all time, hasn't had such a 're-lifing'? I'm interested to see what happens.

The only "problem" with Pacman is that there is no mystique surrounding hi-scores any more. About eight different people have now recorded perfect Panman scores since Billy Mitchell became the first to do it. You just follow the same set patterns each time. Of course it's easier said than done... I even watched the UK champion attempting this at Blackpool last year and it's hard as hell to keep the concentration going that long and getting each turn on each corner just right.

But at the end of the day what's in it for the viewing public? At least Donkey Kong still has it's record being broken. People still wonder jusy how much point pressing can be done. You could play the game very aggressively and 1.1 million is easily attained in theory. But keeping that pace up to the kill screen is just insane. When Hank Chien beat Steve Wiebe at the Kong Off he stopped pressing for points from L=21 as he knew he just had to beat Steve's score to go in the lead. He could have broken 1 million had he pressed harder ( I watched this on live feed). He was on his last man from ~550K so did amazing to win on that game as it was.

As far as gaming interest and tactics/strategies are concerned DK > Pacman any time.

Richie and Roy Schildt will be having a little talk tonight live stream on the Richie Knucklez stream tonight at 5pm east coast time.

Disclaimer: Richie Knucklez doesn't have Roy Shiltz Telephone number (Roy is that crazy to have it blocked, I guess in his own mind he is just to much of a celebrity to have his phone listed. I think otherwise) so this coversation is at the mercy of Roy Shiltz calling Richie at 5pm eastern time. The feed will be live at Richie Knucklez Arcade Games on Justin.tv

Not for the faint of heart!

I'll be in the chat room be there and tell a friend or two.

PS thanks for all the support everyone.   I been swamped and going to read over the whole forum and see if there is any questions left unansered

Damn it.... I missed most of this interview because of the short notice. Will the audio of the interview be on your site later? It seems Roy did cover most of the stuff he's said before but it at least gave him a platform to explain fully his grievances... but like I say I missed most of it.  :banghead:

Roy is correct on one thing for sure... you cannot have the high scores of Missile Command in one score table if players played on different trackball settings. That's just stupid. It's like allowing someone to have a high score in the Donkey Kong chart with extra lives or something. It just would not be allowed.

But if you could get Roy to play MC again and take on Tony Temple in a public head to head that would be awesome (sic)! Don't be too hard on him not playing MC for so long and not having his own machine. Billy used that exact same reason for not doing too well in the Kong Off, but he helped out in many other ways with that event so it wasn't expected of him to win.

The Q/A session after Roy left was pretty good too. As a suggestion next week if Roy phones you again, perhaps you could take some calls on the speaker phone direct to Roy? Love him or loathe him he's a character that competitive gaming should embrace. He sparks debate and interest.

EDIT:  Oh and Richie... what the hell is with that ridiculous authorisation code on your website?? I tried to register but I just could not get past that stage. I eventually exceeded the limit to register. I hate those things. Difficult to read those characters on psychedlic green backgrounds. Can't you use something else???

I will look into the forum thing for ya seeing I built the site and set up the forums.

I will see if there is an option to take that code off seeing I was wondering why we don't have more people sign up on our forums.

Thanks for the support and watching.  I probably talked to you on the chat.  It was a good time

Before the start of the event, Billy did say that he had not play Donkey Kong in nine months. (But he didn't use that as an excuse for not doing better relative to the other players).

And as for Roy. He was never good enough to get his claimed 1.7 million back in 1985 and if was never proven that he did. His own inconsistencies and false statements are the reason his claimed score came under scrutiny in the first place.

The only reason why his score was finally entered back onto the T.G. scoreboard was because of his continuing badgering of Walter Day. Finally through attrition Roy got what he wanted, despite the contradictory positions of players who were involved and present when Roy claimed to get his high score at Johnny Zees in Victoria British Columbia.

The controversy over the Missile Command trackball settings was a late argument started by Roy in an attempt to cheapen Tony Temple's accomplishment, which is why he claimed his so-called score was achieved on a harder trackball setting.

So just before Walter "retired" he he instituted a "pardon" and reinstated Roy's score in an attempt to quiet Roy. He also attempted to make the trackball settings a non issue by making those settings "player's choice".(Even though despite Roy's claim, no one had ever submitted scores on the R8#4=ON setting).

Roy of course would not play Tony Temple on factory default settings(R8#4=OFF) because he simply is not the player Tony is. A now, despite is imaginary score placement on the scoreboard he will not even be in the top three once the most recent submission is verified.

That game has more dynamics than the same four screens of DK over and over again.
