Completed 28 Days Later Cabinet
« on: January 01, 2011, 04:42:18 pm »
I have started a new project based on the centipede cab dimensions.  Only problem is I didn't give much thought to artwork or a theme.  I thought I would find loads of marquee and side panel art in the UK but have been proved wrong.

I want to make the theme nice and easy with no design costs.  The only ideas I have had up to now are a ford mustang theme - shiny red, white vinyl stripes and chrome finishes etc.

I have seen the project MAME cab where the side art was done with a door poster.  You can get futurama bender wall posters in the UK - maybe a futurama themed cab?

Sorry about posting a load of pictures all in one go - just haven't been able to get out of the garage to get on the PC  :D

The sides of the cab are 18 and 12mm MDF.  The sides are in two pieces as the 8x4 would not fit in my car and I couldnt wait or afford delivery.  I jigsawed the curves, its not a bad job but no way I will be able to route a slot for t-mould without some serious sanding to get a straight edge.  If anyone has any ideas for a finish that does not involve t-moulding I would really appreciate them.

I have hinged the door and added a 25mm cam/barrel lock that I got for a couple of dollars from ebay.  The lock stay was a pain to do because it did not come with the pack and I had to fabricate it.

Speakers come from a 42 watt 2.1 desktop pc set.  I tried a standard 2.0 4 watt set first and they were rubbish.  I drilled straight through the outercase to mount them and used screws through cable clamps to prevent the case cracking.

I added the monitor support panel and added the vesa monitor bracket.  The speaker panel has been added, I have made this removable just in case I have issues with the speakers in the future.  The light is an under counter strip light that cost around $10 from ebay.  The 13W seems a little to bright so I may swop the tube for a lower wattage.  The size is 530mm and fits well.

The moment I have been dreading - cutting the control panel.  I used a 29mm hole saw, this worked much quicker than a flat wood bit.

The monitor seems to sit ok.  It is a left over 19inch 4:3 screen - I have thought about a 22 or 24 inch but these seem about 1/2 inch shorter than the 19inch.  I think I may stick with it for now I can always change it when I have more money but cannot afford $150 at the moment.  I have dropped the buttons in to check their fit before i start on the artwork, and thats where your help comes in... ;)

that is a very nice looking cab, you should be proud.  Futurama has been over done, be original.

how about a Zombie theme?

or a God of War theme?

Terminator Theme?

How about Ronald Reagan Vs Zombie Nazi theme?

Or go straight Centipede theme....

My recommendation - you mentioned Futurama first, go with that thought, but don't just slap some images on it and call it a day - take some time and work on your artwork and the results will pay off in spades.  Start by doing up a simple mockup of what you want your CP, sides, and marquee to look like in mspaint or photoshop, then jump into Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape and start creating a vectorized version of your work.

Futurama overdone? Bah Humbug  ;)

Seriously, there's always room for more Mr. Rodríguez!

What about the spaceship, or maybe some Zap Branigan/Leela action....

I like the idea of the zombie idea... maybe a 'walking dead' theme one?  I think i'll definitley consider a futurama one as well  ;)

I'll get some more pics of the cab as it is progressing and put up and some artwork for your comments when I have had a doodle.

Thanks guys

Marquee and front panel and side ideas.  I may paint it up in black/dark green colour and splat it up with different shades of dark green/black.  Should look ok with black t-mould.

Other idea I am toying with is black t-mold and a 28 days light tan colour sceme based on the limited edition version artwork with coffee stain blood splats and the mathching london panaroma scenery right round the cab and the marquee......

or one in bright red with black panaroma scenery of london right round the cab with black t-mold......

Any preferences?

Since you're a zombie fan how about a Plants vs Zombies theme?  You could make opposite sides plants or zombies.  It seems like those graphics would vectorize well.   And it would pretty much be the coolest cabinet ever.

What about Zombies ate my Neighbors by KONAMI? It was a blast to play as a kid and seems like you could possibly have more fun and Ideas to play with than a serious (mature) zombie theme.
Always thought it was hilarious you could take out a zombie with a water gun.
Just my thoughts as you were/are considering Futurama.  :)

I have settled on a 28 days later theme.  Ive spent the last two days completing the plastiglass for the marquee and CP and priming the cab.  I'll post pics when I get chance.

I have been working on some MaLa theming - I have just done the main, start and exit screens.  I just need to edit the theme layout and I'll post some pics of it running in MaLa.

One thing can anyone help - is this TR239 bit suitable to make a slot for 18mm MDF and 3/4" T-molding with a 3/32" barb?  Is it everything I need (I have the router)...

http://www.rutlands.co.uk/power-tools-&-accessories/router-cutters/slot-cutters/TR239/slot-cutters-with-arbors-&-stiffening-collars

Thanks

Hi any help on the router bit question on my last post? - the T-Molding arrived today and I am keen to get it on before I start the paint and art work.  :(

I have uploaded a few more pics so you can see progress of the cab and the frontend over the last couple of days...

The marquee is 2x 2mm perspex sheets that the artwork will be sandwiched between with 20mm black plastic angle to hold it on.

All the plastiglass was cut using a jigsaw while the plastiglass was sandwiched between MDF to stop it cracking I did the same for drilling the CP.

I coated the whole cab and CP in 2 coats of undercoat - I will use wet and dry paper tommorow to get everywhere smooooooth.

I have almost completed the MaLa front end 28 days later theme - this is the screenshot of the front end working

Looking good so far.  8)

Based on the info here: http://t-molding.com/store/product.php?productid=55&cat=6&page=1 the 1/16" slot cutter is for
Quote
Use with T-Molding that has a 3/32" wide spine (including the barbs).

I would say the 239 was the one you're after.  Can't speak from experience, but I imagine t-molding.com know what they're talking about.

The slot cutter did the trick for the t-moulding.

I have now finished this project and I am well pleased with it.  I will post some pictures of the finished article tomorrow - I have attached some update piccies to bring all up to date on the build.

The completed CP being tested out of the cab.  I have the background music as the 28 days later theme tune, creeps you out a little until pacman boots up and...relax.

The sides of the cab after a few coats of plasticoat enamel.  The colour is vibrant deep red not washed out like the pic.

I applied stencils to do the side art logo and london eye artwork.  They need tidying a little - I used white spirit after taking the picture to wipe away any excess spray after removing the stencil.

If you do stencil I would use a hole cutter to put holes near to the edges of your cut out and then overlay with masking tape - it helps keep the card down flat.  No matter how flat it looks as soon as you start spraying the paint and air will curl and distort the stencil.  The masking tape helps keep the edges down through the hole cut outs.

I used red plasticoat on the black speaker grilles.

The side art almost finished......

I will use my proper camera tommorow to get some shots of it finished with the T molding and monitor in the cab....

Well after a couple of months of fun its finished.  Just got to figure a way of getting it out of the garage and into the house (and up some stairs :-[) !!

The CP is all wired up - I used bellwire to save twisting frayed copper strand wires together. It looks a bit of a rats nest but no one will see it.

PC and amplifier installed underneath the cab.  PC is a jumble of spares I had - DFI Infinity mobo/AMD athlon 3400+/1GB mem/Nvidia 7600GT silent heatpipe.  The PC is on a rectanlgle of cut up rubber welcome mat to knock out any noise in the cab.  Mala is the front end running Mame for the arcade games, Zsnes (Super Nintendo) and Gens (Master System/Mega Drive).

Just a quick play on track and field to test all working....

The final set up.

Finally got the beast up the stairs !! We have a stair well that goes up half a flight then turns 180 degree and goes up again.  The wifes brother helped with 300 pounds of the weight, I got 10 of it  ;)

The walls got a bit of a bashing but nothing that cant be touched up.

Just bought a bar stool same colour.  The daughter loves it - just beat megaman 1 and 2 and spent an hour completing gaia crusaders  8)
