Sanwa and Seimitsu mounting plates
« on: December 10, 2010, 12:30:13 am »
This is my first post but I've been lurking for a good month now and I'm still not savvy enough to find the answer I need so please go easy on me.

I have a generic cab that I'm currently working on converting to a mame cab. The wooden cp has some generic competitions installed on it.
What I want to do is get new joysticks but I want to make sure the mounting plates fit into the cp without having to route out more wood or redrill holes. (I had to travel out of town just to borrow a freaking router from a friend and I don't want to have to do it again  :()
I heard that Sanwa JLWs will fit happ comp sized mount holes but if I get Sanwas I'd rather get the JLFs which will not fit.
Is it possible to attach a JLW mounting plate on a JLF joystick?
The other option I'm considering is getting Seimitsu LS-32 sticks. Will these fit on my cp without modification?
I also understand that these japanese joysticks are best if top mounted on wooden cp's but I believe that I have enough wood routed that bottom mounting would be just fine for me.
Thanks in advance.

Not an expert on this, but from what I know it's very difficult to mix and match these joysticks as far as mounting placement.

According to slagcoin - http://www.slagcoin.com/joystick/mounting_layering.html - JLF, JLW, and various Seimitsu sticks all share 40mm x 85mm mounting plate holes. I don't think Happ sticks are compatible.

And I'm not sure how you're gonna bottom mount those japanese sticks, but it's something even I have been practicing recently, and I found it very difficult to give the stick proper height AND a sturdy, routed surface.

It sounds like you should consider restoring (with bondo and all), or reconstructing a new CP to fit your needs.

I've been thinking about this too.  I really like the Japanese joysticks - its too bad they don't just make a version for wood.

What about using this plate
http://www.focusattack.com/products/Sanwa-JLF%252dP1%252dS-Mounting-Plate.html

with this method (picture 2)?

Then you can route out as much wood as you want and leave ~1/4" to hide the plate, but the joystick is entirely supported by the metal.  Would that work?

Why  not just get the joysticks you like and create another CP top? Shouldn't take you more than a few mins to route out another based on your current and then just top mount the sticks you want (JLFs by the sounds of it)?
