best 4-way joystick ?

i have only used a few different ones:

Wico 4way leaf switch stick
betson space invaders 4 way stick
Sanwa JLW-TM-8 with the restrictor set in 4way mode


and the Sanwa JLW is by far my favorite.  It has a wonderful feel to it, is very quick and responsive and the throw distance just feels perfect.  I have one in my vertical classics cabinet and it is perfect.

I used a JLW on a Turnarcades cab at the Blackpool expo. It felt really nice and played Donkey Kong excellently. The spring was really light too which I think helps quite a bit. I notice that many people tend to want to go for a stronger spring (they always say this about the U360s) but for me it's the complete opposite.

Actually the best way to find out is to buy each joystick and then you'll know exactly what works for you. Sell them on here or ebay when your done!

Is there some sort of adapter that will allow this joystick to be used in place of a standard joystick? (The longer side seems about right, but the shorter side is too short).

Also, what is the thickness of the base? (For months I've been searching for a joystick with a shallow profile and long stick for a wooden CP that has very little space beneath it).

But the short stick means relegates their use to metal CPs.

The item you linked to does not function as a true 4-way.  You will likely be disappointed with the ease in which you can hit diagonals with it, even in it's supposed 4-way mode.

As for mounting, just rotate the stick 90 degrees and it will fit between your current mounting holes.

Simple geometry indicates that longer sticks sometimes make for sloppier controls.  If you like the tight reaction time of the old school 4-way controls, you pretty much need to route a pocket into the underside of your panel.  Either that, or flush-mount them, which will take care of your depth concerns as well.

I don't know what you mean by "Flush-mount" them, but the original plan was to route out the underside of the control panel,but I'd need to use a metal plate because it would severely weaken the panel if I want it thin enough so that the joystick is at "classic height".

Flush-mount means to cut a hole to accommodate the body of the stick and to route the top of the panel to accommodate the thickness of the metal plate.  You can then fill or use an overlay to finish. 

Also, You might not think so, but 1/4" of material is fine to hold a stick, as it is a small area surrounded by much thicker material.  It would take a hammer to break that through.  If the loss of 1/4" is enough to ruin your day, then you need to flush-mount.

Ok. Then that is exactly what I had intended to do. I just hope these joysticks are worth it, because the bottom of the stick has a nut on it. ?!?

Is this completely your own design?  How is it different from a Sanwa?  How would this compare to the Wico microswitch sticks?

Regarding shaft length...um, yeah....I recently used a shaft longer....hahahhaah.....than I ever have, with a looser spring than I'm used to....my, my....and, though the height was kind of weird, overall I liked the response.
