Happ buttons are too long!
« on: October 29, 2010, 01:46:59 pm »
I'm designing a 2 player bartop and the control panel is 15.5" by 6 or 7".  I would love to be able to put buttons along the front of the cp but the happ buttons are too long.  They penetrate almost 2.75" which conflict with the buttons on the top of the cp.

I'm using 1/2" wood so I don't need 2" of thread.  Are there any good pushbuttons that are shorter or do I just need to design around it?

If you can just design around it, then go for it.  There are "ease of access" benefits to not having the switches and wiring butted right to the wood.  But the same goes for having them butted against anything else, so if you can't design around it, take a look at the Japanese-style buttons.  Most of these have switches internal to the button housing, so extension past the body is nil.  Being on the front of the panel, I'm assuming that they aren't for normal gameplay.  In that case, you can use any attractive switch that fits.  If you "think outside the box" a bit, you might find a different switch that fits and looks even better where you want to put it.

how many buttons and what is their function? If they are for admin functionality, I would suggest using some smaller buttons. Any momentary contact button will work.

Why didn't I think of this?  I saw these momentary contact buttons from happ but didn't realize they would be fine for admin buttons.

The threads are shallower than my 1/2" wood but I can route it down to 5/8" around the button nuts.  Fantastic.

They look suspiciously like Sanwa OBSN-24's. The dimensions seem exactly the same, the switches look exactly the same and the colour range available is..... exactly the same!  ;)

The colors are a bit weird.  I would like white or black ones.   :dunno

Like LeapinLew said, any momentary push button will work. I used this button from Radio Shack as a coin button on my Jamma cab.

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062510

It's tiny, and the red button/black bezel happened to match my cp buttons.  I actually think it's better to use something other than regular buttons for admin functions.

I've bought those before...they are Sanwa.

Well in that case they won't just be fine for "admin buttons"... they are vastly superior to Happ's own buttons for gameplay.

I used these Yenox on a project where I needed a shorter button to replace a Happ button.

My Mortal Kombat cabinet came with some pushbuttons in it that had the exact same look and feel as Il concave pushbuttons.  But they were about 1" shorter.  I have no idea where they came from.

I don't  know if yenox used to make shorter buttons but the ones currently being sold through LL
don't seem that much shoter  (I measured less than a 1/16")
