NFL Blitz and other newer games in mame
« on: October 24, 2010, 11:22:01 pm »
I have read several post about what type of hardware is needed to run NFL Blitz and other newer games in mame.  I don't want to drop money on I-7 980x processor if it won't run NFL Blitz flawlessly.  I was also wondering if the e-8600 processor would be just as good as the I-7 980x processor to run NFL Blitz flawlessly. Plus when people tested these processors they did not say if this is playing the game or just the intro screens.  I would also like a nice list of the hardware too.  Thank you for any help.

I chose the alternative solution.  I ran NFL Blitz and Gauntlet Legends on the Dreamcast emulator instead.  It's pretty much arcade perfect if not better.

I'd have to agree with Delusional. I've done the same and just added the game to my collection of titles for N64 and Dreamcast to ensure smoother frames and more playability. Investing money on newer and faster processors for the sake of a handful of games isn't probably your best option in terms of where to allocate your money in a mame project.

And for the record, in case you elect to ignore the advice and still go with the new processor, to my knowledge the game still plays choppy with the new i-7 from what I've read.

Again, for a few games....just get the roms for a console of choice and run them that way wherever possible.

My daddy always said, "Dont use pliers to do a wrench's job"  ;D This is sage advice. I am running a 3.8 Ghz AMD Phenom II quad-core with 8 Gigs of ram and a 10K rpm HD. Blitz is STILL choppy :banghead: . But so is Donkey Kong & Scramble if I turn on triple-buffering in mame.ini. Mame is not optimized for playability, its for chipset level emulation accuracy (but i'm sure you already know this). The dreamcast emulated versions of many games are better than their Mame counterparts...

Mame is a cool emulator for older games and will be good on the new ones just take the time for it... and use other best emulators instead... Model 2, CPS3, DC, PSX, American Laser Games, Actionmax and other emulators available for your pleasure.

I agree.  If you haven't bought a PC yet, you can get a 3ghz P4 for cheap, maybe even free, and it will play 90% of what you want to play.  A lot of the games that are choppy are choppy not just because of a lack of horespower, but because the emulation on the games aren't perfect.  SO if you do add the horespower, you will still have a choppy game.  My advice is to check out MAWS and see what the status of the emulation is.  If the emulation is still bad, a high powered system will not help you in running them.

Off subject, sort of.

Does the N64 emulator work well with an 8 way joystick?

I was only going to have emulators from my childhood, but NFL Blitz, NBA Show Time and Killer Instinct are games I'd want to be able to play on my cab.

With mame?  Is this the case for anyone else?

Are you running NullDC off of a front end?  I could not figure it out for the life of me.

Blitz runs 100% on my cab EXCEPT I get a single sound stutter when the "NFL BLITZ" logo pops on screen for some stupid reason.

I'm running a Core2Duo at 2.8ghz on XP64 running a 64 bit compile.

The 64 bit compile is IMPERATIVE to getting those games running smooth.

oh sorry.. should have given more detail. I run MAMEUI64 .138u3 with windows 7 ultimate 64bit. I get sound doubleing on my arcade machine which is an athlon x2 6400, but on my main PC (the 1090t) the game runs perfectly. Hope this helps

Dont bother with a better cpu - just use nulldc for dreamcast. I loved Souledge but couldnt get it to run properly with any of my arcade emus so got nulldc for dreamcast and it runs great with the controllers mapped properly to my 8 way 7 button control panel. I think im running a 2.8Ghz P4 with 2GB Ram and on board grafix.

MY experience as well. The 64bit OS made a difference.

FrizzelFried,

Can you tell us what you used to compile your 64 bit version of MAME?  Mame Compiler 64 perhaps?  What options did you check for the compile?

Thanks

NFL Blitz is my main game I love to play I tried it on 32 and 64 bit flavors and on the 64 bit ran 8 gigs of ram with twin gforce video cards in sli position and a dual core and still the game ran fine but the sound chops too much. So I just bought Blitz for PC and use Maximus arcade and put it into the cd tray and leave it and created a shortcut and put it into the batch files I found out how to do it here... http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=104725.0 from DeLuSioNal29  . Thanks DeLuSioNal...it worked great!

Dunno what to say other than the only sound skips i get are at the BLITZ logo screens.   I do run at 640x480 on an arcade monitor... maybe that's the difference?

I have not played the dreamcast version... I have played the N64 version and thats halfway there.... But being a Blitz lover and used to play it all the time. I bought the pc game to find out i think i paid 10 on amazon... And I do not see any diff in the game play at all. Just like the real Deal.
