How big are your balls?
« on: September 19, 2010, 12:40:03 pm »
Just had to post a subject like that.  ;D

How big are the trackball(s) on your cab(s)?  I am not sure if I should go with the 2 1/4" or 3" ones.  From the games I play, it seems like most used the 2 1/4" though I do love Marble Madness and it used a 3" if I remember correctly.  Any thoughts or recommendations?

"The size of avocados"  (bonus points to anyone who knows where that's from)

I believe 3" is todays industry standard.

3 inches due to popular games like golden tee and all the bowling ones. 2.25 is just for what? centipede? You can still play centipede with big balls.

3" but it's detachable

Also, am I the only one with just one ball?

I think you mean 'Durian Fruit' not 'Avacodos'.

Gotta be 3", and I wouldn't use anything but the U-trak unless you have some specific need to use one that normally uses a mounting plate.

3" Utrak all the way.  it functions great, looks great when lit up, and is really easy to mount in a wooden panel.  i mostly use it to play centipede and millipede, but occasionally some world class bowling as well. I recently played a real centipede cabinet here at a local mini golf place, it has a 2 1/4" trackball and it just didn't seem as nice as using the 3" ones i am used to.  we also have a 3" happ trackball in our cabinet at work, and i have a 3" wico trackball that i will be installing in my other cabinet...you can't go wrong with a 3" trackball (unless space is an issue).  if you don't already have one, the Utrak from ultimarc is a great choice

I've got an old Atari 4 1/2 Track Balltm in the kids cab.  The extra size actually helps them control their games better.  True, it takes up a lot of room on the CP, but they are not that interested in Golden Tee at their age so I really don't need too much space away from the front glass.

the women that come over to play my ball have agreed that being 3" is perfect and has the right feel. Anything smaller wouldnt feel as good.

Guys thanks for all the comments and funny innuendo.  Sounds like 3" balls are best (for arcade cabinets).

If you take the time to completely rebuild and "hack" a Missile Command 4.5" trackball, you will experience the smoothest, most superior trackball experience ever. Once you start playing Golden Tee with a MC trackball, you won't want to play with anything else!
The biggest deal will be how to install it, unless you run a Missile Command cabinet mame, of course!

Blue balls are no picnic, let me tell you. I feel for you man. Hope you get that resolved.

This thread is quite funny. It just so happens that I do have 2 big white 3" balls, and they both feel great. I love how the slightest nudge from my fingers is enough to really get things moving.

Anyway on a serious note I really do have 2 3" Happ trackballs in my control panel which I had to have for games like Marble Madness and Rampart, because those games are just no fun by yourself. I only like to play with myself when there's nobody else around. It's ashame to let 2 big balls go to waste though so I like to play with a friend every chance I get.
