Space Invaders Slim Build Update

So my arcade cabinet is coming together, mostly finished.  We just installed the subwoofer, speakers, and marquee.  That marquee you see is not the final one, just a place holder. I placed the IR sensor on top for now for the controller.  It's not attached.  I also need some plexi for the marquee and to go over the monitor.  But before that we need to paint it, install the t molding, and make a hole in the back for the power chord to come out. The software is having some issues (the nes section freezes for some reason). I have no grills for the speakers, but I think I like how it looks without the grills.

Here are some pics and a video. In the first pic you can see the cab with drawer out, in the second pic there's a top down view to show how we reused parts from the subwoofer we took apart. My friend knew a little about this stuf, we had to build a box for the subwoofer using a specific formula.  It sounds great, but will sound even better when we seal the box to minimize noise leakage. At the beginning of the video I try out Boxee, towards the middle you can see me using Hyperspin, before launching mame games I have cpwizard display controls for the game for a few seconds.  I also have player 3 and 4 setup on xbox 360 controllers.

**Oh and the music is a consequence of preparing for a 80's halloween party** (the cab is suppose to be the main attraction)

it looks really really good dude :)

but if im going to be honest , ( and please dont get upset with me for saying so ) but i think the
distance between the control panel and the screen is a bit on the large side . but other than that
i think it looks pretty good and hopefully it'll be even better when finished :)

and i love that front-end dude. it really is eye candy .

Yeah I definitely agree, You can't really notice though when playing or when you see it.  We tested mounting the control panel higher or the screen lower... It just didn't feel right.  If the screen was lower it wouldn't be at eye level, if the cp was higher you wouldn't be able to rest your wrists comfortably.  I'm not upset, I appreciate the honesty.  I was actually trying to look for something to place in that spot to make the space less noticeable.  I already have the admin buttons on the panel so I can't do an admin button. I can't afford one of those 7" screens right now, and have decided to leave it out. I am toying with the idea of placing some art or an instruction card there. I'm leaning towards art, so if you know about any nice art please let me know.

If you look at this build, http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=78494.0, the distance between the cp and monitor is similar, but the glass and admin panel hide it.  Once I paint it black and put some plexi over the montor that might do the trick.

I'm really happy with the layout of my panel, the sound, and the softare.

i checked out that link for the penny arcade.

and i see what you mean with regards to hiding or even masking the distance between the cp and the screen.
so ya , i'd reccomend doing something similar to blend the whole cab together :)

That CP looks really cool! I love it. The only thing that would concern me is the placing of the dedicated 4-way stick (I'm assuming that's a dedicated 4-way :p)  Would your hand or wrist not be very close to the top row of buttons next to the 8-way? I can just imagine accidentally pressing the first button or so while playing Donkey Kong and jumping when i didn't want to.  ???

Ahh yes that's a good point, I wish I'd have thought about that earlier though. It's pretty permanent now.  Still, the 2 4 way buttons are right and left click and don't match any of the 8 way buttons.  So even if you did press those buttons accidentaly, it wouldn't mess up your game

I had a similar situation with my first cabinet.  It was upright like ops and so the monitor had to be pretty high.  I wound up little rectangular door under the monitor to store stuff.

If you wanted the monitor lower, you would have to tilt the screen...which means the cabinet couldn't be as slim.
