Possible defective I-pac?
« on: August 07, 2003, 01:40:28 am »
I just got around to wiring my Ipac 4. The jumper is set to MAME/PS2. However quite a few buttons appear to have no been correctly assigned to the default settings and some have no assignment whatsoever. Has anyone else run into this? Is there a walk around to force reprogram the default mame settings? Or am I out of luck and most likely going to have to send it back for a new unit?

Yeah, I had one where player 2 button 5 didn't work.  It happens,  but his customer support rules.

What did he end up doing for you? just swap it with a new one?

Check your wiring. Especially if you have coin switches and make sure they are wired correctly. Run the test with the multimeter that andy mentions on his site it is quick and you will likely find the problem. http://www.ultimarc.com/ipac2.html

OK, here's what I found. The MAME jumper set. buttons 5 and up on players 3 and 4 do not function. The WinIPAC program also doesn't register they're being pressed. When that happened I assumed it was the ipac or a wiring issue. I set the config to ALT and reprogramed it with the default mame settings + players 3/4 buttons 5-8 configed. Which appeared to fix the problem. However I also noted in the WinIPAC program if you do not have the same config loaded or something with those buttons defined it still does not register a button push even in debug mode. They buttons still function but the program doesn't appear to notice they do.

It's working correctly. Those buttons are not assigned to anything in MAME mode, you need to program them. The reason they are not assigned is that there is no standard MAME setting for them. To program a 4 player panle with 6 buttons for all 4 players needs care, and you generally have to change some of the player 1 and 2 settings (eg for buttons 7 and 8) to avoid conflicts. So it was not really practical to have every single input assigned a setting in MAME mode. All of the keycode settings are in the table on the web page mentioned in an earlier post and it clearly shows these as being blank.
