I'm really wanting to build a Midway Cocktail cabinet. Been looking around and am thinking of trying the 19" LCD drop-ins instead of a CRT since 19" CRTs are getting hard to find and also it would be a lot lighter.

Just wondering how well they work, I'm assuming a flatscreen 19" bezel would work wouldn't it? Also, from my experience with LCDs vs. CRTs, a 19" LCD would be exactly 19" of  diagonal viewable screen while a 19" CRT would be an inch or two less because of how the tube works. Does this have any factor in the design?

Holy Crap that looks nice.

Can I ask what monitor you used? I'm looking at a Vision Pro CGA/VGA

http://www.happ.com/monitors/49260310.htm

What did you use for a bezel?

Nice cab!

I wouldn't personally pay $300+shipping for a 19" LCD.  I'm not sure of the advantage that model has other than nice mounts, but you can pick up a used one of CL or ebay for a fraction of that (maybe free!).

Mint.  What kind of 19inch monitor did you use?  Is it a 4:3 ratio?

Looks awesome  Great job on it

When I was working on my Canucks Cocktail I was trying to decide whether I wanted to go LCD or CRT.

I eventually chose to keep the CRT (mostly because the curvature you get out of the tube is more representational of the original games)....but at the time  I was considering checking out this site for an LCD purchase.
http://www.arcadespareparts.com/arcade_parts/monitors_chassis/open_frame_lcd/12230.html

Seems like a great deal, and it's 4:3...but I don't know how much import costs would be.
As well, with an LCD, you have to be very mindful of the viewing angle. Some LCD's have a very short angle of viewing from the sides, so depending on how you're mounting it, it may not work well for a cocktail.

The LCD is a Acer V193Db. It is a 4:3 screen and it costs around 149 euros. I didn't use a bezel. I routed the underside of the MDF to make room for the screen.

You did a great job.

I can't find that monitor in the USA.  How is the 180 degree viewing?  I am always worried about that on the future Cocktail I am building.

I found this one. Seem close

doesn't have to many specs.

http://www.amazon.com/Acer-CV3RP-D04-19-Inch-Monitor-Speakers/dp/tech-data/B003E1QEVQ/ref=de_a_smtd

My biggest concern is the 180 degree viewing at angles and what not seeing it is for a cocktail table

I've been looking at LCD arcade monitors rather than PC monitors, would like one that accepts 15 kHz.

These are both advertised as drop-in replacements

http://www.happ.com/monitors/49260310.htm

http://www.wellsgardner.com/products/details.asp?iCat=1&iSubCat=5

I'm just a bit worried about viewing angle.

Viewing angles for the cocktail are great! I'll try and post a video of the viewing angles. The side viewing angles (if you're on the side of the cabinet and not at the controls) are excellent on one side and crap on the other side.

I can't believe looking for a 19" 4:3 monitor would be so hard to find.

I found these two but haven't seen them in person.

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Acer-V193DJB/14575820?findingMethod=rr

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Asus-VB195T/14906640?findingMethod=rr#Specifications

They don't seem to post the monitor dimensions with out the stands so it is throwing me off.  I might have to stop at the store on my way home with a tape measure.

if anyone has used these anyone know if they are good for the cocktail tables or what the dimensions of the screen are with out the stand?

Thanks in advance

I built a midway cocktail with a 19" lcd.

I think you need to ship that cocktail cab to me so I can fix it up.  It clearly needs to have a cold drink on it.  I would be happy to provide the cab with one (and a new home too).  That cocktail cab truly looks like it came from a factory that makes Space Paranoids cabinets!  Only as far as I know there isn't a factory...

Can I get some info from you?  Is Pacman jerky or did you find a way (hardware or software) to get the refresh rate correct?  I got an LCD monitor and cannot get things to look right...Let me know your setup....Thanks  ;D

Pretty sure those are both 5:4 as they are 1280 x 1024, I may end up going with a 19" WG even though its 5:4. If I could find a good 19" CRT still around I may consider it.

On a side note, is Billabs still in business or not? Their site won't open again. The last time I was there they had 19" CRTs in CGA and Tri-mode, but now I cant get there.

I used a 21 inch lcd in mine 4:3 but i got it from bestbuy. cost 150 and was on sale.

But try craiglists for crt monitors. I see 19 inch ones on there all the time for about 20 bucks if you pick up.

Just to clarify things a bit:
17 and 19 inch LCD's are NEVER EVER 4:3! They are either widescreen or 5:4 1280x1024.

If you want 4:3 LCD's with good viewing angles, there are 20 inch MVA and IPS 1600x1200 panels, and 21.3 inch 1600x1200 IPS and PVA panels. The HP LP2065 is still on sale and a remarkable 4:3 display: IPS, great angles, very fast, no noticable iput lag. If the 19 inch panels are PVA, you probably have lots of LAG. The mentioned Acer above is a TN screen, so not really great for vertical games.

Hey Sjaak, your cocktail cabinet looks great. Nice choice of artwork!

Have you considered putting a piece of tinted plexi over top of your monitor?
It seems that the blacks you're getting out of it are a bit gray due to the brightness setting on your LCD (very prevalent in the first pic above). This would really help the contrast in your image.

Nice that looks awesome.  Great angles.   I couldn't find that seeing I am in the US so I took a chance on an Asus 19in Standard monitor.  I took some photos at different angles.  It looks like it will work for my needs.

Normal playing angle photo below

Lower playing angle photo below

self explanitory i think photo below

worst angle

Great idea. I have tinted glass om my galaga cab and that looks really amazing. I should have done the same with this one. That would probably also make it completely black when the screen is turned off.

@extendedplayarcade: Looks just fine. I also have one angle where the image looks crap.

Does the happs lcd monitors make the games at 15hz look better then a normal lcd monitor?

And why not use a CRT if your going to buy a new monitor?  you can get a 19" for like 250 bucks or something.  (I think for vertical shooters the LCD is fine, but man, for classics?)

@ Sjaak Yeah I am presently surprised how good it looks for my needs.   My cocktail table is going to be one side that is against the wall

so the side against the wall will have the view of the worst angle.  So when someone sees the good angle the monitor will basicly be upside down.  I hope i explained that correctly.

@Lilwolf  I went LCD because of convinience.  They are easier to work with and I swore myself I would never buy or try not to use another crt monitor again.  The classic games while playing them looks quite good though IMO.
