Arcade Project Article at GameSpy (with thanks)
« on: July 01, 2010, 02:03:57 pm »
Hey folks,

The first of my three part article on building a MAME cabinet is up at GameSpy: http://www.gamespy.com/articles/110/1103044p1.html

Part two will be the actual build diary, part three a resource guide.

Many thanks to all of you here on the forum who served as resources for this, and particularly to Saint, who's quoted in the article and provided guidance for me in the process.

Nice job.  :)

My only complaint is using the term "arcade" in place of "arcade game".  No biggie.

Arcade is a place. Now if you're speaking of it as a metaphorical arcade (ie: it's the arcade all in one box), then I forgive you.  ;D

I read that the other day. Not bad, but another +1 about the Arcade Game instead of Arcade thing.
I'm all for anything that spreads the word and gets others into this.
I would love for the old-style arcade games to make a come-back.
Redemption and shooters get on my nerves.
It's seems that is all there are anymore.

Part 2 -- the real build log -- is up now.

http://www.gamespy.com/articles/110/1104616p1.html

I cover traditional buildlog stuff (and not half as well as some of the very heavily documented projects here! But I had a word count!) along with thoughts about what it's like actually having the thing completed.

Next week, a resource guide to the sites/parts/pieces/vendors that aren't dead links!  Guess which website is first on THAT list (thanks again for the help and inspiration guys).

Very nice! Looking forward to part 3 :)

By the way, the cost is a secret... Never tell anyone the cost until they get started and are committed  ;D

Excellent series gwjrabbit, looking forward to the final part too.

One thing i was wondering is that the http://arcadeemulator.com/ site you mention at the article is a bit strange, cant really find anything useful on there.

The vendors listing is quite comprehensive & up to date at http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Vendors

Should be http://arcadeemulator.net/, not .com

Quote
Medium Density Overlay (MDO). It's a plywood core with a water-resistant paper coating on it, often used for signage. It's light and strong like regular plywood, but with a super-smooth face that paints like a sheet of glass. It's a bit more expensive than MDF, a bit less than plywood.

I have found plywood fairly inexpensive, perhaps comparable to MDF.

Obviously this place is number one on the list with a bullet.

Enjoyed it as well! I also enjoy Wil's blog so was a cool mention as his arcade stories are among the best of his written materials.
