Odd issue with WG D9800 Screen adjustments
« on: May 13, 2010, 02:31:14 am »
OK, so I'm not sure where to ask this, hopefully this is a good spot.  I've been having an odd issue and not sure if anyone has had this problem before.  So I'm adjusting the screen for different resolutions so that when I play the games they are flush to the screen.  But I've been having issues with two sets of games.  First, when I adjust capcom games like Marvel Vs Capcom, to be flush with the screen, it changes the adjustments for Donkey Kong and makes it run off the screen.  If I adjust Donkey Kong to be flush with the screen, Capcom games look as if they're running in letterbox.  This issue happens again between Mortal Kombat games and pac-man.  What boggles me is I have these games all running at different resolutions.  None of this games are sharing the same resolution or the same refresh rate.  So I'm just... confused.  Has anyone ever had this problem and is there a fix for it?

The monitor does not know the exact resolution you're running it at.  All it knows are the horizontal and vertical scan frequencies.  Furthermore, most monitors don't have memories for every exact set of scanrates you send it, but rather just a few "bins" that they match things up with.  Chances are the Capcom games and DK are pretty close while MK and Pac-Man are also pretty close, so they end up using the same memory "bin".

Many digital arcade monitors only have maybe 3-4 memory spots: CGA, EGA low, EGA high, and VGA or a similar set.  The WG D9xxx series seems to have quite a few more, but it's not going to have a dedicated memory for every possible resolution you throw at it.

In other words, this is normal.  These monitors are honestly not designed for this purpose.  They're designed to be set up for one game at a time and maybe switched every few months at most.

I mentioned in the PM that while we can get close to the Capcom resolution we can't match it exactly so you will have some space above and below your screen...if you stretch this to flush then yes your DK will go beyond...since the DK/Pac Man and vertical screens rely on that space more than the horizontal get those flush and let the horizontal stay where they are...that is what I did and it looks great.
