Joystick advice please
« on: May 03, 2010, 03:52:22 pm »
I'm looking for a 4-way / 8-way switchable joystick for use in a simple 1 player controller. Basically joystick and six buttons which can plug into any PC with USB. The joystick doesn't have to be switchable from above as I don't mind opening the controller for a few seconds to switch between modes. But I definitely don't want anything that requires screws or e-clip removal. The switching has to be very simple.

The U360 is out because in my experience I have found that the U360 needed a powered hub to work correctly on three out of four projects I have built. In my opinion it's quite simply the best stick out there for cabinet use, but for a small single player unit designed to move between different computers I just don't want the hassle of a power supply and extra USB lead. I also don't like the Mag-Stik or T-Stiks either (I've had them) and found the throw too small and too stiff. I like a short(ish) throw but the stick has to be very light. I'm one of the few people that prefer the standard springs in the U360's for example.

So far I've narrowed it down to 4 options... the Ultimarc J-stick, Rollie Electronics/Seimetsu switchables or Tornado Terry's 4/8 way switchable.

I know I will like the "feel" of the J-Stick as it's a modified Sanwa which is what the U360 is based on. The switching looks really easy too so long as the plate can turn easily without much stiffness.

Is the Rollie a modified Seimetsu? Does the restrictor plate need the screws on the Rollie/Seimetsu sticks? I see it kind of clips on and is then secured with screws. But will the plate drop off if it's not screwed in place? I don't want to mess with screws but if it's a simple clip on/off then it would be fine. Looking at it closely it seems the 8-way part of the restrictor isn't even needed as it doesn't look like it restricts any part of the throw at all. I could be wrong though.

Also the Tornado Terry switchable... how does it switch?
It's not clear on his website. Is it removal of an e-clip and then reverse an actuator? The reason I'm considering this stick is because I've read really good things about the Pac-Man stick he does which is basically this one but non-switchable to 8-way.
