Smoked Plexi....How Dark?
« on: April 30, 2010, 04:18:14 pm »
My latest (near completed) project is a Sega Virtual-On cab converted into a driving cab.

It didn't come with a screen.  I dropped in a 27" TV and want to put smoked plexi in front of it.

I'm still a newb, so I'm hoping to avoid buying the wrong thing.
I want to do plexi instead of glass because I'll need to drill holes in it to mount it (studs are already there).

I'm paranoid about it being too dark or too light.

Are most people using grey tint or dark smoked?

Is this too dark? http://cgi.ebay.com/Dark-Smoked-Plexiglass-2074-3-8-x-23-7-8-x-15-7-8-/360248366501?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53e079d5a5

Edit: Noticed it says 12% light transmission.  I'm assuming that's too dark.  Any idea what % is "standard" for this application?

I used a standard smoked tinted film when I built my cab, and it worked nicely. Though I eventually decided to remove it, mostly because I could see dust specks behind the film.

But You'll definitely want something that isn't super dark, as even with the stuff I used, I had the brightness cranked all the way up on the monitor.  This is a link to the film that I used:

Hope it helps.

I went with tempered glass 1/4" solar gray #16.  This looks great, it makes colors on the screen really pop and vibrant.
