This is really neat.
Ever wanted to play Mario Bros as Link or Mega man or Simon?

Nice try though...  Hey maybe I should post my own thread about it too...

really it should be here or in Software. i never read 'everything else'
so thanks.

i hope there's an .exe version someday. i could download the .swf but i wouldn't want to go messing with it to run on my cab. i have a pretty good little collection of (mainly free) indie games going on the cab that i'll post about sometime

Too Cool!
I as well wish that I could run it on my cabinet... As above, I'm able to run shockwave/flash offline, however there's no options for changing inputs. Maybe one day we'll be able to (easily) modify these type of files for easy play on an arcade cab. :dunno

Pretty neat (I haven't seen this before).

I wonder what it would take to export the code to something we could fiddle with (maybe with a nice .ini file, heh)...

How to Play With a Gamepad

Super Mario Bros. Crossover was designed to be played with a gamepad. Yes, it can still be played with a keyboard, but I highly recommend using a gamepad of some sort. It is difficult to relive the classic Nintendo experience without one.

The platform that the game runs on, Adobe Flash, does not support gamepads directly. However, you can bypass this limitation by emulating keyboard input through the gamepad. In other words, whenever you press a button on the gamepad, the game will think you are pressing a key on the keyboard. If you have a PC, there is some great free software called JoyToKey that does this for you. If you're on a Mac, you can use the demo version of ControllerMate. You can set your buttons in the game, so it doesn't matter what keys you match the buttons to. If you don't have a gamepad for your PC, I highly recommend using an Xbox 360 controller.

Full Screen Mode

Another limitation of Flash is that it doesn't allow keyboard input while in full screen mode. So if you want to play in full screen, you need some kind of workaround. On a mac, you can set up the "Universal Access" options in "System Preferences" to zoom the screen. That's very easy to use. I'm sure there's something similar on a PC. Or you can always just change your display resolution to something like 800x600 or 640x480 while you're playing and change it back when you're done.

See, with a few workarounds you can pretend you're playing Nintendo. If this isn't detailed enough or you have questions, just ask me. Thank you so much for your interest in my game.

I first played Super Marios as an arcade game (Playchoice) and not on an NES as I was a computer gamer primarily at the time (C64) so for me authentic feel are my good old arcade controls.

Great game!  Wish I could get it on my cab... argh!  Seems like it would be a crazy amount of work to get it cab friendly.

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

I first played it as Vs Super Mario Bros, then later I played it as Super Skateboard Bros or whatever that hack was called.

Well, a lot of the indie games i run don't let you remap keys. So when I make a list there'll be a 'autohotkey required' section or something like that!

this Mario game *just* came out.. and it's getting really popular i guess. the author's probably getting a lot of requests for a download version, so i'll give it a while and see if he does it. if not, i'll hack something together whenever i mess with my cab next :)

You can download the Flash file from here (save target as):

REMOVEMEhttp://uploads.ungrounded.net/534000/534416_SmbcPreloader.swf

If you are interested, there are tools out there to convert Flash files to standalone executables, such as http://www.flash2x.net/ for instance.

I've done this before with a couple other games, so I will attempt to do so with this one. Stand by for a full-screen EXE version...

Sorry guys but the file does a URL check and won't run outside a browser. I'm not going to cross the line and decompile someone else's work. Maybe if someone gets permission from the author, or heck he/she might do an EXE themselves if people ask nicely.

definitely. he's right to do that given the cash-in attempt(s).
it's a brand new game, and he's said there's bugs he intends to fix. i'm going to wait a bit before i play through it. but after playing a few levels with Mega Man and Bill... it's pretty awesome :)
