Suggestions for powering on/off TouchScreen JukeBox
« on: March 23, 2010, 06:33:21 pm »
I'm doing an ELO touchscreen JukeBox build and plan to have the PC hidden behind a wall in another room (furnace room).  Is there a front-end I can run that will allow me to both power off and power up the pc from the touchscreen somehow?

Crazy question it seems, but thought I'd ask!?!?!?!

property not, not with touchscreen (due as I assume don't drive like a mouse and hence not directly supported by bios). Many apps do can shutdown when they quit.

But get a remote control instead to power on/off and control it that way. Some of them can power on your machine.

The only way that might work is putting it in standby instead of power it off, if it supports wake on moue then it MAY wake on touchscreen but it is not something I have ever tried personally. I just set my bios to boot on power resume s i switch the wall socket on and it powers up, my software powers it down. I still have to pull the plug as the amp and juke lights would stay on otherwise.

You know what might be cool for something like that?

one of those "touch light" things that you wire up in line with a light, and then connect a wire to a metal object somewhere. When you touch the metal, the light comes on. They have em at home depot.

You'd probably want to rig it so that touching it could ONLY power up, and not power off, but other than that, it could be cool.

then, you'd just have to touch something metal around the screen, maybe a screw or something.

I use a regular arcade button to power on my jukebox.

As you can see the button is directly wired to the jukebox motherboard. Also, if you hold the button in for 3-5 seconds it will shut it down, but that isnt a good way to shut it down. To do that, I use Simple Touch Front End. I made a shutdown batch file, converted it to an .exe file and then select it to shutdown.

Yeah, I used a regular arcade button (as described above) as well.  One push turns off the PC and one more turns it back on.

In my jukebox software, there is a button on the Options\Misc Page4 which allows you to shutdown your computer from within the application, but this will not help you turn ON the computer later    :P

if the wire is thin enough then you can most likely slide the molex plug (on your motherboard) over the pin and wire together.

I use a combination of a push button switch (illuminated momentary switch) connected to the mobo header and one of those "smart" power strips.  The pc is plugged in to the "Always on" outlet of the strip and all the rest of my peripherals (both monitors, klipsch pc speakers, lighting, etc) are plugged into the "switched" outlets. When I power on the juke with the push button, the pc fires up and power is switched on the the monitors, speakers, etc.  To shut down I close album player on the touchscreen and shut down windows from the start menu on the touchsreen as well.

I bought a pair of remote control power switches from a guy on KLOV.  Check out ebay item 180478216326 for a similar one.  The one I got controls 2 outlets.

I press the power on button and it turns on power to the powerstrip in the jukebox.  This turns on the PC (resume on power BIOS setting), touchscreen and speakers.

I use SimpleTouch FE for a front end, so when I'm done with the jukebox or game or whatever, I use the FE to shutdown the PC.  When the monitor goes blank I press the remote off button to turn off the powerstrip.

Doesn't album player shutdown windows for you on exit? Really I can't imagine you would want to see windows at all once it was all set up.

So I picked up the SimpleTouch Front End, looks pretty good.  How do I write the PC Shutdown Executable and load it up in the SimpleTouchFE as an option?

Thanks!

Place a shortcut in the 'Startup' folder or use Instantsheller and use STFE as the bootable.exe file.

There is probably an option to have it do that but to be honest I haven't had the need.  Unfortunately, until I buy a new home, I don't have a resting place for my juke.  As it stands now its out in the garage and only comes out for special occasions.  I have it set up with dual monitors (only 1 touch) so a lot of the times I have other programs running for the other screen (videos, visualizations, etc.) so getting back to the windows desktop isnt all that bad as it allows me to kill the other running processes.

Right click the start button and selected explore all users.

Expand the programs folder and you should see a folder named STARTUP just copy the shortcut into that.

Doesn't album player handle the videos and vis on the second screen? Just seems like you could have things running a little more smoothly than you do at present.
