DC Distribution System
« on: March 13, 2010, 10:12:42 am »
Looking online I see various devices that can supply DC voltage to several devices, yet they seem to be home security oriented.

Last night I had a great idea of rewiring my workstation, and counted 10 power bricks of every voltage from 12v to 3.3v.  I would really like to remove all 10 bricks (minus the 360) and have just one power brick deliver different voltages and amps to each device.  I'm sure would like to see a reduction of my carbon foot print by doing so.  Also with 220V even though its switched at every socket, I'm worried about thermal build up.

I'm not an electrician, even thought the back of the desk looks like a electrical shop, and would really appreciate some advice on how to accomplish this.  I envisage an 150Watt AT PSU with the 12V and 5V rails connected to something measuring out the correct voltage and polarity, but I'm sure it is more complicated than that.  ;D

Thanks!
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

Don't worry about the amps.  As long as you have more than you need, it'll take care of itself - the devices will only pull what they need.

You could just use the 12v rail of the power supply and set up voltage regulators for common voltages - 9, 6, 5, 3, etc, but you'd need to be sure that the regulators WILL handle the current draw.  78XX series regs are cheap, pretty stable, and easy to work with.  Then, just add connectors as required and off you go.

That said, why?  One power supply problem and you blow all your devices instead of just one.
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???
