LED Wiz with current parts question
« on: March 09, 2010, 03:55:07 pm »
In researching and assistance from members (Thanks Kman!) I understand the 500ma limit of the LED Wiz before requiring external power.  I have the following:

12x5v Novagems
2x5v Sanwa Joy mod LEDs
1xRGB GGG trackball mod kit

So am I safe in assuming that based on ~20ma per light I should be fine with my 15-18 LEDs running off the LED Wiz?

If you are using single colour LEDs in the Novagems then you should be fine. You will have 12 buttons lights + 2 joys + 3 from the trackball RGB which @20mA would draw 340mA at full tilt.

You will need 17 outputs from your LED Wiz.

Thanks FrancoB...yes all the LEDs are single colour (green) with the exception of the RGB trackball (GGG)

You are going to need external power for this setup.  Assuming your Joy mods are using a single 20ma LED each, you will need about 1700ma, which is well over what the USB port can provide.

This confuses me. Wouldn't he be effectively using 17 leds (14 single color and 1 rgb), thus needing 17x20=340 ma? Or does the trackball kit draw more power?

Ya that is where I am confused too...60ma for the trackball + 40 for the two joys + 240 for the buttons...= 340? No?

RandyT...where are you getting the 1700ma from? Just curious as im obviously calculating wrong...

I think in this case Randy is wrong - as Franco calculated, 340ma should be the draw.

Thanks Arzoo...that is what I suspect. He likely misinterpreted the numbers or made an assumption about all of them being RGB rather than just the trackball...although even that wouldn't add up to 1700ma. Ill just chalk it up to a miscalculation on his part.

Thanks!

Not... 8)

Per the NovaGem product description at the website;

Power Requirements: 100ma @ 5v DC Per button.

Now multiply that by 12 for the buttons and three for the Electric ICE upgrade kit.  Then factor in the fact that the LED-Wiz consumes current as well, then add a tiny bit as to not cut things too close to the limit.

We aren't talking about kitchen variety LED's here.
